I was applauding after a performance recently and the question came to me - why do we clap after a performance? Do we have a general understanding as to why/when humanity decided to put their hands together as a show of congratulations? (self.AskHistorians)

Why is putting our hands together a universal show of congratulations and support? I've seen in some movies (in 19th century settings) the knocking of knuckles on a hard surface in place of clapping, for example.

Was curious to see if any of our illustrious denizens of Ask/Historians may have this insight on this small but universal detail in human behavior. Thanks in advance!
