Why did French become an International language in the Early Modern period, rather then Spanish, English or even Dutch? (self.AskHistorians)
submitted 10h ago by Lord-Gamer
I ask this question because it does seem odd to me that French would gain such prestige and prominence among the European languages. Especially when France wasn't really anything special when it came to it's Early Modern Colonial exploits, which were slower and most less successful than the Spanish, English, or even the Dutch. Why did French become so widespread despite this clear lack of dominance (politically speaking) on France's part?
