I have been asked to give a talk to some Boy Scouts about what life is like as a blind person. I was wondering if you guys had some things you would say to people about blindness and how we live our lives if you had the chance

So, to preface this, my mom has given talks similar to this. Basically, she starts by telling the story of how she went blind. She then talks about what she does differently than someone who can see. She then asks if they have questions, which they always have lots of. Have a sighted person help you to pick out who is asking the next question, or, ask the scouts to call out their name when they want to ask. Good luck!

Explain two points.

First, blindness isn't a binary thing. In most cases, the victim may have some limited vision, perhaps as much as the ability to distinguish light from dark.

Second, it's alright to be helpful, but ask first. Sometimes, helpful sighted folk get in the way of an otherwise competent visually-impaired person.
