Could a low sighted or blind person give me a walk-through of their day? It's to make a blind character more believable. (self.Blind)
submitted by deadlyhausfrau
I know this isn't terribly life-shaking, but I'm playing in an RPG where we all are randomly assigned various traits and disadvantages. I drew "blind". Now, I usually write a series of stories to go along with games as a sort of adventure log, so I like to research backgrounds a little. With that in mind I asked a friend of mine who is legally blind what her day is like. She said her day is very different from most blind people's because she is also in a wheelchair, and my character is sound in body. So, at her suggestion, I am asking here.

The game is set in the modern world, and my character lives independently for the most part, though another player is her roommate. According to the gamemaster she is totally blind and has been since birth.

Any tips?

This is probably a little overdue, but maybe I can help? I'm legally blind (completely blind in my right eye and 20/200 in my left) and I have been since birth, so I've adapted and a lot of people can't actually tell I have a disability until they see me read something.

To be honest, my day is pretty typical to that of any college student, but here are things that might help you:

going to a cafeteria or restaurant alone is not something I enjoy doing, for a couple reasons.

* From the social aspect, I can't find people by myself. I need someone to help point people out to me.

* From the eating aspect, I can't read menus most of the time. If it's printed out, the font is usually too small or all sorts of different fonts and they're hard for me to read. Is it too much to ask to just use Arial? :) Or maybe it would be big enough, but the lighting in restaurants, namely sit-down restaurants, is always dim. Not helpful. (good thing I have my $100 flashlight, aka my iPhone). If it's a McD's style menu (up on a board), I can't see that far away and while they're supposed to have menus printed, either they don't or I face the problems already listed. And if it's a buffet, the names of foods are either hard to read or non-existant and I have no clue what some foods are. (are those mashed potatoes or rice? Not sure.)

* Speaking of iPhones, thankfully they have some pretty good zooming options and large text options. I don't use the voice over only because I was confused the one time I tried to use it, though that was for all of five minutes and I wasn't really trying. I also have a MacBook Pro as my laptop, which I currently have the screen zoomed in so I can read what I'm typing, though I still am hunched over quite a bit. My back/shoulders hate me a lot.

Those are the big things I'm thinking of, but if you have more questions, feel free to ask! There are plenty of other little things, I'm sure, but these were the first ideas to pop into my head. :)

I wish I could, but I'm not blind. I follow this subreddit because I'm interested in the world of blind people as well. I hope you get some responses! If no one answers, I know it's not the same, but you could try your regular daily routine with your eyes shut or even just close your eyes and absorb the sounds around you wherever you are. Good luck!

Oh, I got some replies. People sent me PMs. They've been very nice about it, and very gentle about the, "We're gonna PM you this, cause it would be weird to leave it out in the open." Thanks for your advice, though.
