Features for a protagonist to have if blind (self.Blind)
submitted by Ladbon
Hey r/blind.
I've only been here and done a quick search for a few things about games so I am pretty new to this subreddit.

I am currently looking into making a game where the main protagonist is a blind person and during his dreams he is having adventures with strong visions to help him through solving his nightmares.

What kind of features would you guys think would be essential to actually move through a world you create during your dreams ? can you walk, traverse through space(floating) or something else ?

Any real experience would be helpful, thank you for your time in advance *smiley*
Much love,
Ladbon

The person could use a cane. As they touch objects with it the screen visual shows like a sonar ping as a general image reflecting back. It would be a small area and likely black and white to enhance the effect. Maybe sounds at static locations to maintain direction.

very interesting point to make. The problem is that blind people will never see this happening so it would only help people with vision to see through a blind persons eyes.
It's a great idea though.

You could create a more pedagogic game where you would paint the picture of your world in a way where a blind person could play through this.

Though I think you could make it in two settings where blind people get a whisper of from an epic book(shahnameh) and the picture is painted on the screen and you get your direction from a narrator.

The other would be a text popping up and you have to dictate it for the game to progress.

would that be interesting? think of listening to a book while your playing it without even seeing it visually but dreaming you way through it. It throws away the boring part of reading a book with just visualizing it and making tough decisions throughout the game.

I love the way you think sonar would make your pitch black game available for you to see. You could implement perfect sound editing for people to understand how, where and when you should move. =) sadly it's already been done with Pulse Prototype.

Depends on what you define as "Blind". Sight is not a black or white topic; you don't see or not see thier are many shades of grey. I am legally blind I have enough sight to be dangerous but not enough to always avoid things. From my experience the white cane works as an obsticale avoider and only for things thaat are on the ground. As for it being based on a dream world, people who are blind dream differently. people that are born blind have no concept of anything the have never seen the world. where as someone who has gone blind later in life will have memories of colors shapes and objects. Sound is important to the blind and visually impaired we rely on our hear to navigate our souroundings. I recommend to put on a blind fold and listen, A game to give a blind perspective needs sound and tactile feedback. Ie if you put your finger on the screen you start walking and if you move your finger left to right it will do a two tap method. Look up Tommy Edison ( The Blind film Critic) on youtube, be is blind from birth and does alot of videos that will answer a lot of you questionsThis is a great idea.. Good luck on it
