How to give a campus tour? (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
Next weekend, a prospective student will be visiting our university campus. She is blind and I want to know what I can do to ensure she has a very good tour of campus. I will be the tour guide. We have had training before so I know to be myself, not be condescending, use appropriate language, talk to the student and not their support, etc.

I know I'm supposed to focus other senses. Our campus has some really cool plant walls so I thought I would the visitors to touch and feel them. I don't know what else to do.

I would be decriptive, touching something works great for the blind, just share you enthusiasm whith her and try not point and say look at that. use either a clock to describe where things are, instead of saying on your right, say at 3 o'clock wee have a plant wall. I find most blind and partially sighted people understand when you say it's at something oclock. You can also ask her what her vision is.. Is she totally blind or partially? hope this helps and is not too late.
