New Phone for Low-Vision Wife (self.Blind)
submitted by kevinparry1
My wife has low vision. She currently has the Iphone 4s, but is looking to upgrade. The main functions she likes to use are Voice Over, Zoom, and camera. She likes how Iphone can easily switch from Voice Over to zoom (triple click home button).

Is the Iphone 5 the best, or are there other smart phones that are better?

I am on Andriod, but have found this magnifying app to be a life-saver: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.davidparry.magnifying

Thank you, I will pass that on to my wife. She downloaded a couple magnification apps, but none were to here liking.

Yeah, I too tried several, and this was the best free one for Droid.

I have low (approaching poor) vision. I use a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The larger screen size helps me out a lot, especially when coupled with the previously mentioned Magnify app.

She went with the Galaxy 4S. She really likes it, and its bigger screen from the Iphone4. She has an Ipad for most of the non phone related activities (like facebook). Thank you.

Hi. My brother uses an iPhone 5 with accessibility features. It still works like an iPhone 4S did. The only thing he noticed is that on iOS7, it's harder to change the camera mode from photo to video. Apart from that, not much has changed.

I will relay the message, maybe she is happy with what she has and will keep going Iphone. Thank you.

ios7 sucks for low vision, ive tried it myself, as I'm low vision too, I ended up buying a BB Q5..

if your near an apple store, take her there to actually TRY them, before getting sucked into a crap build quality phone.

I also like the SAMSUNG S3 with accessibility stuff installed, or even the Note 3

pm me if you need deets.

My wife ended up going with the Samsung S4. It had the tripple tap zoom, and voice over which is what she uses the most. Also the big screen and the camera won her over. After seeing her have it, I can see why the Iphone is getting beat out. Thanks.

yeah, ever since jony ive changed ios, many people with low vision have dumped icrap, going to Samsung or Motorola devices.

I myself like my crackberry, but if i had the cash, id use an s4 myself, I like it a lot.

If you're interested in accessibility on Android phones and tablets, check out the eyes-free mailing list. There's a lot of great info and power users who give advice on that list.
