Smart headphone/earphone app? (self.Blind)
submitted 9y ago by cashlo
I am considering building an android app to provide web search, social network, etc, controlled via buttons on the earphone or voice. Would that be useful? What functions would you want in it?

Ok, first allow me to say that I am completely blind so I know for a fact what functions are missing on the tech features I use. I use a HP pc, a samsung galaxy s 4 with google's accessability features. Now, that being said, I have to be honest with you, I know very little to nothing to apple products and the programming features.
I'm not sure that the app idea you have is completely viable. If you're discussing pre-jellybean operating systems then your app is killer. But post-jellybean google-search often reads aloud some of the search criteria I look for. Apps like 'twitter' and 'facebook' which I use often work with text-to-speech already work. Not one-hundred percent, but it's only minor things. Well, games with graphics too, but I doubt my phone's going to tell me I'm on a bananna or apple on candy crush.
There is however a full on wish-list of things that I wish google Chrome would do. If you'd like, I could explain some of that. For one I would like your app to remove the images off of any website I am trying to look at. Also, if your app could tell me what letters and numbers are in the 'are you human' box, like the ones for reddit for example. I also have not been able to find a fully functional email service, gmail works 'ok' but not completely for google-talk-back.
What I am really looking for for functions for the blind are more social network. Is there one that will take out photos? So that I don't have to scroll down for hours after hours to get passed the photos I can't see? Maybe a blog service, or status postings without so much moving around? An app that reccomends other apps, their functions that helps the blind, how to use them, etc etc.

Thanks a lot for the input! One thing it can already do is filter your Facebook feed and read aloud only the status update, I can also work on getting it to work with rss feed. About the "are you a human" box, there are some paid services online that does it, but it's cheap, like few dollars for 1000 times. I can build a Chrome plugin, if there's enough interest... oh wait there's already one https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rumola-bypass-captcha/bjjgbdlbgjeoankjijbmheneoekbghcg?hl=en

Does that link work for mobile os? I don't think it does, just for pc/macs. If your app filters out photos from timeline feeds on facebook and twitter and the like then as far as I'm concerned whatever you charge for it is worth it.

Hey, good on you developing for the blind, they are a often forgotten user base that is growing for smartphones. I also developed an application for $1.

One thing i would recommend when thinking of ideas is try using the TalkBack accessibility features in Android. They really do a lot to let you know whats going on on the phone. Use that and try to see what's not helpful. For example, i opened up my default camera application (Moto X) and the reverse camera button and video capture button translated to "Unlabeled button 48" and "Unlabeled button 96" when focused upon. Thus my idea for a blind camera was born.
