Why are weekdays in braille like they are? It doesn't make sense to me. (self.Blind)
submitted 9y ago by Bulletti
My fiancee noticed this on her pill dispenser. Sunday and monday are the same, wednesday and friday are the same. Doesn't make sense in english or in finnish, and I doubt they would use french on it.

Google is useless here.

$1.
The labels mean Monday on the far left and Sunday on the far right.

Thank you for posting this. And you are exactly right- the braille is labeled Sunday-Saturday.

I think mine is misprinted

I found a few different braille charts but all seem to agree

Could you upload a picture or describe the dot pattern?

When describing braille dot patterns, they're numbered this way:

1 4
2 5
3 6

So if the dot pattern is a left-pointing-T-shape, you'd write 1-2-3-5, meaning this pattern:

*
* *
*

If you could write out the dot patterns for the days of the week, we could try to make sense of them.

I checked a chart so I can actually just give you the letters they resemble.

Monday to sunday:

* S, 2-3-4
* M, 1-3-4
* T, 2-3-4-5
* W, 2-4-5-6
* T, 2-3-4-5
* F, 1-2-4
* S, 2-3-4

After typing this like that, it struck me. Our week starts with a monday, that's why I was flabbergasted at first. It had the Monday's abbreviation first, but on an american product, it's horribly wrong.

EDIT: This could be catastrophic actually. The blind person using this product would know the correct dates and meds, but a nurse or a caregiver could possibly give the wrong day's meds.

So to make sure I understand, do you have a manufactured product where the printed text says Monday through Sunday, but the braille labels say Sunday through Saturday?

If so, I agree it sounds dangerous, and it could in fact be illegal. I'd encourage you to report it and maybe get the product recalled.

If either the braille labels or the written labels were not part of the manufactured product but were added after the fact by someone along the way, there might not be a strong case. It's still worth trying to get it fixed, but it will be a big case of blame-game then.

Kudos for discovering this, and I hope you're able to get it reported!

Pictures uploaded.

That is the case. I'm not sure who manufactured it or if the labels were added later (very likely they were added later). Either way, I'm going to do my best to find out who are involved and then complain hard about it.

It's idiotic even if they matched; the blind person would have to know the names of the days in english, too. It just shouldn't be sold here.

I would also be very interested in seeing a picture of this, if you are able to post it. You and dmazzoni are correct about it possibly being dangerous.
