17" laptop magnifier screen? (self.Blind)
submitted 8y ago by IndustrialSabotage
Hi all, I'm looking for a magnifying lens/attachment for a family member's laptop screen. Does anyone out there know of any affordable options?

You would be better off using magnification software. It also usually lets you adjust the contrast and/or color usage which is frequently also important.

That's interesting. Do you have any recommendations? We've just been using the standard windows text size options.

What operating system are you using? Windows, MacOS and Linux all have built-in magnification software. There are also commercial options such as Freedom Scientific MAGIC or ZOOMText

From the BF. Not as much immediate help as I had hoped but an option worth pursuing.

Magnifier is the best that stock windows offers- this person probably has worse vision than mine. They should talk to CNIB low vision specialist, they can demo commercial software like Zoomtext - which is much more capable http://www.aisquared.com/zoomtext

Windows or Mac. If Windows what version? I will pass this question onto my boyfriend who is low vision. I will add that there might be some benefit to buying a larger monitor to use with the laptop.

She's using a windows laptop. Macular degeneration issues. I think the idea is to not spend a lot of money, so avoiding another monitor would be good. Also, she has the laptop because she's in a small apartment, and likes to be able to put it away when having guests. We've been using the windows text magnification, and she's still having to use a magnifying glass.

7... or 8... Not sure. I'm tasked with long distance tech support.

On Windows 7 and up, the default magnification software is pretty nice. Press WinKey+Plus to start Magnifier and zoom in, WinKey+Minus zooms out, and WinKey+Escape zooms out all the way and closes Magnifier.

The program has some options too. You can set colors to be inverted, change to a magnifying glass (a little box that follows your mouse and magnifies whatever's under it), etc.

LOL I totally understand the long-distance tech-support. I'll ask my boyfriend what he recommends for Windows 7 it should also work with Windows 8.
