Blind people of Reddit, a few questions(self.Blind)
submitted 8y ago by MP1286
I've been given the task at university of starting a project from scratch related to any topic I want.
I really wanted to do something for a charity or to raise awareness for something and I have come up with an idea that I would like some advice on.
Idea:
An event to let people experience what it's like to have a disability affecting one of your senses (Sight, hearing or touch etc.). I have some ideas for the hearing part however, I'm struggling to figure out in what way I could do this with sight. I know there is no way these activities will correctly show what it's like to be blind, but I want to show the difficulties faced each day for those affected.
The sensitivity of the subject and me not wanting to cause offence in any activity is the reason for me posting here.
* Blurred vision challenge (Reading blurred text) * Description challenge (One person has to describe objects to another) * Blindfolded sandwich making/ everyday activity (One of my team members suggested this but I think it could be taken wrongly, please advise)
**Questions**
Here are a few questions in order to help me think of some ideas for activities.
1.What do you feel like people who are not deaf take for granted?
2.What daily tasks are you unable to do as a result of you being deaf/HoH?
Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me.
(The main body of this text has been copied from my post in /r/Deaf as the event combines both disabilities)

I appreciate your effort in trying to bring attention to the struggles so many face every day.
Here are a few ideas: Trying to navigate in low light in an unfamiliar setting (like finding a bathroom in a restaurant you've never been to), similarly, finding a seat in a theater.
Navigating a crowd with a narrow field of vision. I know there are goggles available that replicate the inability to see in your periphery.

Thanks for these ideas. Do you know what I could search to find goggles like that?

The description test sounds like a good idea, you should also include a memory test where the participant would be blindfolded and would have to interact with various things on the counter or remember where they are spatially in relation to them. I am mediately thought that you should have a task involving orientation and mobility… Blindfolding someone and giving them rudimentary training on how to use along came to maneuver around and through obstacles. Since you included closed captioning in the deaf events, you should have some event center to run the technology available for those of us who are blind; voiceover on Apple devices, descriptive audio movies, specific device applications .
Making a sandwich blindfolded, pouring liquid's like juice into a cup, even just trying to eat a plate of food would be good test for people to experience our world.

I couldn't think of any accessibility measures for the blind so thank you for this, I will see how I can incorporate these into the event!

Which university? Maybe there's some blind or deaf people that go there that could participate in your event. I like the technology idea. Get some braille alphabet cards and have people decode a message. Do some basic tasks on a computer using only the keyboard, or the keyboard and no monitor. Sometimes these types of events end up putting forth the notion that it's so difficult to be blind while watching people get stuck doing inanely simple tasks. It seems to me that you're trying to avoid that result which is very cool.

I tried contacting the university to see if there are any blind or deaf students I cant get to do a talk, just waiting on the response now.
Indeed, I'm trying to show the difficulties faced for deaf and blind people but also how we can help and how society helps to enable them to undertake everyday tasks (such as your braille idea!).
