Need Help Buying a Wallet for Blind Grandmother (self.Blind)
submitted 8y ago by SicilSlovak
Hello /r/Blind. My friend is looking to purchase a wallet for her fiercely independent, and fashionable, grandmother who is now blind. She is very interested in $1 with six compartmentalized pockets for bills and coins from Blind Mice Mega Mall.

I've never heard of this company, and to be honest the site looks questionably structured (which supposedly has been done to optimize it for internet readers for the sight impaired).

My questions are:

* What is the best wallet for the blind? Preferably in red.
* Is Blind Mice Mega Mall a legit source to purchase from? Other suggestions on where to look?
* Anything else you'd like to share.

Thank you!

Technically any wallet with alot of compartments can be good for blind users. I my self learned to fold bills in different fashions so's to set them apart even when put in same compartments. This way I'm not relying on a blind friendly wallet- I can in essence use any wallet of my choosing.

Many blind people, myself included, fold their bills so there isn't a need for extra bill pockets. She may not need any sort of special wallet at all. That being said, if she likes that wallet, I can't think of a good reason not to try it. Also, I have heard of, and shopped at, the Blind Mice Mega Mall site before and it's a reputable small business.

Is your friend's grandma completely blind?

I looked at the wallet and there are no specific features to help with low vision or blindness... so I would search other websites like Amazon or Ebay with a bigger selection.

Websites optimized for the visually impaired will usually have site accessibility features prominently displayed, For example, most will allow you to change the text size, contrast etc. $1

Thanks for the reply! It is my understanding that she is completely blind.

I've tried searching for wallets designed for low vision/blindness, but Amazon is fairly limited. I will check eBay next.

Can you help me understand what are some specific features to help with low vision or blindness I should look for? I clearly am lost as I thought the "3 separate coin pockets, 3 zippered pockets for bills" were such features.

Thank you again!

I would say the most significant feature would be multiple pockets to keep different denominations of currency separated. Change pockets should have a zipper because blind people will inevitably turn it upside down. Also, if the zipper dangles a bit, it will make a noise and the owner will always find their wallet amongst other things they might carry in their handbag.

For the material, I would suggest soft leather, it is great to the touch and is akin to having something in your favorite color if you are sighted.

NB. most bank notes have braille on them so the multiple pockets are not as necessary anymore. The multiple pockets also make the wallet a lot bulkier. Hope this helps

So a wallet like the one linked may in fact be a good choice, as it has:

* multiple pockets (to include 3 change pockets)
* zippered pockets
* leather

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that bank notes in her country have braille.

I would say yes... the wallet seems fine.

Out of curiosity what country is she in?
