Can anyone tell me if this is close to "father" in Braille? I want to get this as a gift for my father for Christmas, but I'd like to know the accuracy. (self.Blind)

Hi! First off, neither my father or I are blind, but I think that this is a beautiful idea. I recently heard of this company: https://spectcompany.squarespace.com

They partner with nonprofits to provide vision through corrective lenses or cataract surgery to someone who would otherwise not be able to afford it. I really like their simple bracelets and I love that my money can simultaneously serve two purposes: a meaningful gift and helping those with vision impairment(s).

I'm thinking of getting my father the "Father" bracelet. I know nothing about Braille, so I'm not sure if the engraving in the bracelet is actually "Father" in Braille. There is a disclaimer from the company that states, "Note: bracelets are braille inspired and not intended to be read by blind individuals," so I don't expect that it will be completely accurate, but I'd just like to see if it is at least close. I also might purchase one for my sister, so if anyone could take a look at this one as well, that would be wonderful: https://spectcompany.squarespace.com/shop/sister

If anyone can help, it would be great! Thank you :)

(Edit: Forgot to include the "Father" link https://spectcompany.squarespace.com/shop/father)

As I said in the other comment, the dot patterns on the bracelets are correct.

The reason that they probably give the disclaimer is that braille is meant to be read with very specific dot sizes and spacing, and if you mess that up it's going to be hard for a blind person to read - not impossible, but tricky.

It's like if you put t o o m u c h s p a c e in-between letters, or if you ran letters too close together - possible to read, but might take longer to puzzle it out.

Well since you linked to the "sister" bracelet I can almost guarantee that won't say father ;)

Given what I know of braille (which is very little) the sister one doesn't say sister from what I can tell. The close-up of the father one doesn't say father either. UNLESS these are contractions that I'm unaware of. The father contraction (that I know) is not on that bracelet (at least in the close up picture).

Hope that helps a little.

I think you should learn some more contractions!

The "sister" bracelet has the following dot-patterns:

* 6 means "capitalize the next letter"
* 2-3-4 is S
* 2-4 is I
* 3-4 is ST
* 1-2-4-5-6 is ER

So it says "Sister".

For the "father" one, there's actually a contraction that means father: dot-5 f.

* 6 means "capitalize the next letter"
* 5, 1-2-4 means "father"

So it says "Father".

Thank you! That's very helpful. I casually mentioned bracelets to my dad last night and he didn't seem interested, so I'm thinking of just getting my sister one :).

Haha thanks for straightening this out! Like I said, what I know is minimal and obviously that wasn't enough. Our son is learning braille and I'm trying to learn along with him. Clearly I've got work to do.

No problem, keep learning!

Oops!! I'm sorry, haha. https://spectcompany.squarespace.com/shop/father
