What organizations and resources do you know of that help the blind? (self.Blind)
submitted 8y ago by geoffisblind
The mods are compiling a list of resources for the Wiki to better serve the whole community. If you know of any organizations or agencies in your area please share them here so they can be added to the list. We would like to have both large organizations as well as smaller local resources on the list. Thanks for your help!

Present and accounted for (a couple of days late). A little bit on us: We focus on braille in all formats including paper and e-braille as well as audio books and some large print. We are also involved in braille technology research and development. We have several programs to further braille literacy, like the Great Expectations program designed to teach adults how to bring children's books to life and the Touch of Genius Prize designed to inspire innovators in the field of braille literacy.

We also do tours if anybody wants to visit me and if you're in the Boston area.

Well, in Canada, we've got:

* The CNIB, provides O&M Training, runs the CNIB Talking Book Library, and does outreach work: http://www.cnib.ca

* Balance For Blind Adults: provides O&M and rehab training, and hosts community events, for the city of Toronto: http://balancefba.org/

* The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians: does a lot of research and outreach work: http://www.blindcanadians.ca/

* AMI: provides a broadcast/radio reading service, two cable channels (French and English) of audio described TV, and hosts a DV Guide listing every other show in Canada broadcast with audio description: http://www.ami.ca

* The Montreal Association for the Blind: Does, uh, stuff in Montreal. For the blind. I don't live there and don't speak French, so I really don't know much more about them than that they exist. A quick Google can't even find me an official website.

I'm sure more Canadian organizations exist, but those are all the ones I know about.
