Does anyone here find bright text on dark background helpful? (self.Blind)
submitted 8y ago by SophiaDevetzi
Personally I don't find it helpful and the high contrast makes my vision worse. but I have seen many low vision websites which offer this option, so I thought we should offer it too.

I added a custom dark mode for /r/Blind. it is not ready yet, it needs more work and there are some objects which need their colors to be changed, but it is usable.

Use the Dark Mode/Normal Mode buttons in the side bar to switch the colors, and let me know what you think and if it is any helpful.

I can't comment on light/dark modes obviously, but good idea on the subreddit guides. Getting the policy text out of the sidebar unclutters things nicely, and now we don't have to leave those other posts stickied. If we ever make up any rules, we can link them under that heading, too.

The dark mode button at top of the sidebar changes the reddit's URL from www.reddit.com to hc.reddit.com, once you click on it, you will remain in that address (on this or any other subreddit) until you enter the www. address again.

I am not sure how this hack works and how it might affect your experience with reddit and screen readers.

I think I love you.

EDIT: Wish this worked throughout Reddit.

If you want something similar across reddit, the RES extension for Chrome & Firefox has a 'night mode' which does pretty much the same thing - it's what I use.

Another extension you can use, that also works on any website, is the chrome extension 'High Contrast' that basically flips blacks/whites. It's not perfect, but can make some websites easier on the eye.

Doesn't make any change. And it works the same way np.reddit.com works.

This is a good idea, however before I lost my vision I would use Reddit Enhancement Suite a.k.a RES which offered a night mode for browsing Reddit. It would effectively make all the background dark and all of the links light colors to help with the contrast. I would use that with color inversion and zoom on my Mac to fully control my viewing experience.

I don't know how RES works, I should try it one of these days... does it work on any theme, and anywhere on reddit?

It is an add on to Google Chrome and is also an extension for Safari and Firefox. It works universally across reddit, and exposes more options that allow you to disable individual subReddit styles to keep the viewing experience consistent. If you search for it on Google, it will be the first link that pops up and will have an installation link directly on his page once it figures out what browser you are using.
