Useful gifts for blind grandmother? (self.Blind)
submitted by ZacPensol
My grandmother lost her sight a couple of years ago due to a stroke. My uncle lives with her and keeps her active and everything, and she's able to do a lot by herself, but she still gets depressed at times for feeling helpless.

The past few Christmases I've gotten her things like CDs she can listen to, a flameless candle that she can turn on and off herself, etc, so I'm trying to think of other things that can just help her feel less dependent when it comes to little things.

One thing I've thought of was one of those clocks that you can press to tell you the time since she's always having to ask what time it is. I figure there's probably other useful types of things that someone who can see wouldn't even think about, which is why I'm coming here for ideas. Thank you!

I noticed you mentioned getting something that can tell time. I use an adapted watch and I love it. I would not recommend a talking watch though. They seem nice in theory but in practice they are insanely annoying and I stopped using it pretty fast.

I use an $1 and love it. It was designed from the ground up to be blind accessible and it is one of the most functional, simple, and elegant designs I've seen to date.

If you want to find other things to help her to be independent, things like adapted kitchenware are nice, I recently got some adapted kitchen stuff and it is great. You could also look into a mobility GPS like the Humanware Trekker Breeze Plus.

That's all of I've got right now, I'll edit if I think of anything else.

Great suggestions, thanks! She really misses cooking for our family, so the adapted kitchenware is an especially fitting idea. And that watch is amazing!

I really like the watch :) If you are looking for adapted kitchenware in the US I would suggest checking out LS&S and Maxiaids, they have some really good stuff.

Will do! Thanks for the help :)

Maxiaids is awesome.
So many different talking watches too. Bradley is amazing but it can be a bit pricy.

No reason why she shouldn't like cooking any more. :)
There is a great cooking show for b/vi

Everything is described with voice.
And getting back to cooking for fun can be so relaxing and calming - enjoyment for all senses.

An iPhone or iPad (mini or regular) could be fun for her.
Both have VoiceOver, it's pretty easy to use and learn. And you can set it up as a shortcut and change the voices and make it to any speed comfortable.
NLS books can also be downloaded on that. Some libraries use OverDrive - that works too.
Email, facebook, twitter, skype, facetime / audio.. Whichever programs she will want to use. :)

If she is not signed up yet, look into the National Library Service and sign her up, they'll send her a book player and audiobooks in the mail, all for free! This would be a gift that keeps on giving!

Wow, very cool idea! I wasn't aware of this service, but she would love this. Thanks!
