?How to travel wthout harassement (self.Blind)
submitted by feetofire
A relative of mine who is legally blind on account of juvenile macular degeneration, travelled alone to visit my family in Australia. He was unable to complete the landing card on his own and asked for assistance which was given, up to the point where he had to make declaration about imports/etc. The person assisting him refused to fill the sections in, since (I think) they could only be done by the person for whom the card was written.

To cut a long story short, my relative was pulled aside for not having completed the card, taken away and questioned by immigration officers, searched and had his bag searched in addition.

He was finally escorted out to the arrivals hall by immigration officers since they presumably eventually conceded that he was legally blind.

My family currently are downplaying the whole thing (my mum is upset on my relative's behalf) and I feel absolutely mortified that he was subjected to this treatment.

Does anyone have any advice on how to manage this? My relative has travelled extensively before but this is the first time that he has been subjected to this treatment.

What about obtaining all of the paperwork ahead of time? The airlines obviously have this available so explaining when booking the tickets that the person traveling is legally blind and not able to fill paperwork out by themselves might convince them to mail out all of the required forms ahead of time so they could be filled out with the assistance of family members.

That is pretty weird. Not at all what I've experienced. I do a fair bit of international travel and sometimes I have to fly by myself. I've always had a flight attendant help me fill out those customs forms for me. And then when I get to my destination they let me pass through customs pretty swiftly. They never not to check my bags. I'm sorry that happened to your relative but if he's traveling with a cane you would think it would be more obvious?

I may receive different treatment because I'm a short girl. Less imposing, people are always pretty willing to help me with whatever I need. :/

I've traveled to the Azores and back home by myself, home from Japan, and home from Korea, and the flight attendants have always helped me fill out any forms and helped me with any issues I may have.

I would have done it with the help of someone and mailed them. The pulling, insisting, being a pain in the butts to us is just a part of my day to day. I rant to others who understand, and have some witty comebacks when I am in a bad mood to tell them.

Like I love to say it is what it is.
