Text to speech software that can read text on pictures (like memes)?(self.Blind)
submitted by carpe_diem1977
I read in another post that software can't read text in memes or text over a picture. Has anyone found a software that can do this? If not, would it be helpful if I can figure it out?

I'm working on a project with a few of the moderators here called /r/DescriptionPlease which is inspired by /r/CaptionPlease. We are getting it ready to roll out soon and hopefully that can fix some of the problems with these kinds of issues.

Excellent! Is it an open group? I have a friend who is interested in this kind of thing has started trying some softwares.

It will be soon, we are finalizing some stuff and then it will be ready to go. There will be an announcement here when it is ready.

I just found out about Project Naptha. Impressive! But only available as a Chrome Extension.

Yes, it would be incredibly useful, especially as a Firefox extension. The easiest UI would probably be to let the user right-click on an image (my screen-reader, NVDA, will let me press the applications key when it's focused on an image, and the menu with "save image" etc will open) and select "recognize". Then either put the recognized text in a dialogue with an OK button, or update the images alt-text to be the recognized text.

Its definitely possible. E.g. /u/captionbot has a way to do it. On a quick search i found $1, which isnt ready to use out of the box, and $1, which might not be that accessible but its worth a try.
