I have a friend that is legally blind. Before he lost his sight he worked carpentry/construction. He would love to have a job again. I would want to help him but have no idea where to start. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The Wiki as /u/fastfinge stated is a good first step, especially since I think Alabama is essentially complete in our list. Getting in touch with local organizations and DSS Vocational Rehab Services for the Blind is going to be your best bet. They can offer training, equipment, job connections, and even help out with going back to school to get into a new field.

Check out your local Vocational Rehabilitation center. Their only focus is to help people with disabilities lead successful, independent lives. They've helped me incredibly, definitely worth checking out!

Do you mind giving us what country you're in? Many countries have government agencies to help with funding for training, special equipment, etc. But how they work and who they are are different from country to country.

Well, you could start by checking the list at: https://www.reddit.com/r/blind/wiki/organizations/usa#wiki_alabama
Unfortunately, I myself am Canadian, so I can't help much. But I've updated your flare in hopes someone from the USA can provide more info.
