blind people are afraid of heights? (self.Blind)
submitted by 7_0_7
I'm going to participate in a activity to help young blind to climb (sport climb) a wall, and I wonder if they have sense/fear of heights?

I'm legally blind with some vision. That being said I have no real fear of heights in any context, I also love climbing. I think if you ask people with visual disabilities if they have a fear of heights you will get a different response from each individual. I don't mind heights at all, but I would imagine some people don't like them, and some are probably terrified. It's as unique a situation as any other fear with any other person, disabled or not.

I'm totally blind. I'm afraid of falls, not heights. So, for example, rock climbing I'd be totally fine. I'd have handholds and probably be attached to some kind of climbing equipment, so I wouldn't feel at all like I'm about to fall. But standing on a flat roof, when I know there is no railing at the edge, completely freaks me out, even if I'm like 4 feet back. Thoughts like "But what if I'm not as far from the edge as I think I am? My next step could be my last!" keep going through my head in a situation like that.

Everything depends on the person.
I've got some usable views; don't mind heights but Ihate places underground, amd large buildings I'm unfamiliar with.

Yeah it's definitely a mixed bag. I have a friend that's total and heights do scare her. Just the thought of being up high is enough to do it. Even when I could see they never bothered me though so I still get after it now!
For those who don't mind heights I recommend ice climbing! It's awesome to make your own path up the ice and as long as you don't hit your rope you're good to go!

Legally blind here.

My elementary school had a climbing wall, and I loved it.

I went to several blind Summer camps, which always had some kind of climbing activity, weather it be hiking up to the top of a water fall or just climbing a large rock wall, as I recall, only one person out of the 20 or so of us was nervous about the heights.

I went to a blind training program for adults that sometimes did group activities, one of which was rock climbing. I actually missed out on it, but from what I hear, only one person was too nervous to climb, and that was partly due to unrelated health issues.

So in short, it all depends on the person.

HI! I'm going blind, and have had night blindness since I can remember. I agree with the fear of falling, not a fear of heights. I am also good with rock climbing, but walking at night and having to transition from one type of surface to another type of surface, like grass to asphalt, or asphalt to cement, freaks me out! I can't tell the depth and so am always afraid I will misjudge and biff.

This always reminds me of babies who are learning to walk. They can't tell depths even in normal light yet, and have a really hard time stepping from carpet to hardwood, or even tile to a different color of tile. Some babies will just cry and sit down. That's how I feel, but I don't cry and sit down, cause I'm an adult.
