Web Navigation (self.Blind)
submitted by chere_
Hi! Quick one: When you arrive on a website, what is the first thing you do to navigate? Do you tab? or do you go through the headings or the links or the images? I know the question is tricky because most of the time, we go on the same websites so we know what we are looking for...
And which assistive technologies do you use? For myself, I do Tab a lot. Thank you so much for your help!

First thing I do is go by heading. I use $1. I've been trying to get into the habbit of going by landmark, because that would probably actually get me to the main content quicker on some websites, but for whatever reason I haven't managed it. Probably just old habits that are hard to change.

Ok! So H key it is. I though it wasn't possible to navigate through landmarks with NVDA...

It is. d for next landmark, shift+d for previous landmark.

Depending on what I'm doing, I primarily use headings to navigate. I have headings and landmarks right next to one another in my rotor in VoiceOver, so it's quite easy to switch between them and speedily get through a website with Quick Nav on.

Thanks for your answer! So you never use Tab key?

I will use the Tab key every once in a while, primarily to quickly jump between text fields when filling out a form that I don't have any autofill data for. Other than that, I primarily just use my arrow keys.

Do people have opinions on Zoomtext or Jaws?
chere_ [OP] 1 points 7y ago
I've tried them all, for work. I don't have vision problem, so my opinion is biased. However, I really don't get ZoomText. It is not user friendly. The magnifier is annoying and the scrolling is too fast. Like I said, I'm not the targeted audience. I know it's getting in popularity, but I decided that my company will not be supporting this assistive technology. JAWS, VoiceOver, Window Eyes and NVDA will be the only ATs supported for the moment. I think it's not that bad! hehe
