[Question] Browsing reddit/the internet? (self.Blind)
submitted by Kster809
Hey, I'm not blind but I'm very interested in learning how people with disabilities are able to cope with everyday activities that most folks take for granted. This felt like the best place to ask, so here goes!

How do you browse reddit, and the internet in general? Is there a kind of braille reader that allows you to read the text? How do braille keyboards work? And finally, what is it like browsing while on the move (e.g. on laptops, tablets and mobile phones)?

P.S. Who would win in a fight between a giant, 1-tonne duck and 1 tonne of normal-sized ducks?

From what I've seen, it really depends on what the person favors. I personally use a screen-reader (jaws for windows), and I find that it works well for me. Obviously the mouse doesn't play a part in website navigation, hence where arrow keys, and keyboard commands/short cuts come in. This system is generally good for browsing, but there are obviously things that you miss out on: pictures with no description, mostly, though sometimes buttons on webpages are unlabeled as well, which can also provide a disadvantage (tumblr is the epitome of inaccessible and I hate it for that). Also, most people that use screen-readers tend to gradually speed up the speed of the speech so that browsing goes a lot faster than one would think.

However, I do know some friends that use braille technology hooked up to computers via different formats (bluetooth, usb, etc), and they read webpages as opposed to listening to them. I believe that in cases like these, they use the braille device itself to input text via braille itself (so the idea of 'braille keyboards' themselves isn't really a thing since it's a completely different format), but I'm not entirely sure - as I said, I don't really use this way.

Also, for people using keyboards in general: most people take it upon themselves to just remember where the keys for whichever letters are, and use touch-typing.

And as for using things on the go, my screen-reading software is on my laptop, which goes most anywhere with me. However, I also have an iPhone, which - along with many smartphones nowadays - has screen-reading software automatically installed.

I hope that that is was somewhat? informative. Haha. Let me know if you have any more questions!

P.S: smaller ducks all the way!

Tumblr is inaccessible? Wow, that's ironic.

Hahaha isn't it though?

I mean to be fair, I think like... 40% of the issue is individual tumblr blogs versus the entire site - depending on the theme that you choose, certain buttons or links just aren't going to be read well by a screen-reader. However, I'm also pretty sure that the site itself could be majorly revamped, and you have absolutely no idea how much of a tumblr-er I'd be if I could use it decently well haha.

Personally, I'm using $1. It's free and open source, and works with Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer for web browsing.

I also use an IPhone with VoiceOver turned on for browsing while on the go. Though I tend not to use it while actually moving, because I need to pay attention to where I'm going.

And the small ducks would win by a landslide. How fat and lazy does a duck have to get to be a tonne? Could it even walk anymore? It'd just be countless normal ducks nibbling away at a quacking mound of fat.

If you're using Windows 7+ press `WIN KEY` + `+`.

Anything in text format can be read aloud by a screen reader. Screen readers however don't work with all webpages. Normal sized ducks for sure.
