[Question] for blind women. (self.Blind)
submitted by MammaMia05
[NSFW due to potential bodily fluid talk]

Hello.

I'm not blind, but my children both are, so I hope it's okay that I'm posting on here.

I have two wonderful children (adopted), whom just happen to be legally blind. 11 year old Luci and 13 year old Jack.

Without getting in to too much detail, I am infertile, and when puberty hit me I had all the signs, except a cycle.

I know all the details, and have read all the books, but my daughter is getting to the age where she should be starting her period soon, and since she's blind, I'm not sure of how she'll be able to handle it. How will she be able to tell when it starts, or know if she's leaking?

Thank you for any help.

EDIT: I'm sorry it took me so long to respond, I lost my password and just found it now.

I see no one answered your comment. Blind dude here, so never went through a period, but I can't imagine your daughter wouldn't know something was going on. If my balls had started leaking blood when I was thirteen I would have fucking noticed. Unexpected wetness or pain or new sensation or anything out of the ordinary would be a tip off. Just put it this way, I'm as familiar with my own body as you are with yours.

Not blind yet... but I am a woman and I remember being that age. It was not always easy to distinguish between general wetness and blood. In the same way young men get random uncomfortable and unexpected boners, young women get random uncomfortable and unexpected wetness. So knowing if it is menses or vaginal discharge is unclear. However, if she is legally blind, that doesn't mean totally blind. She might be able to check in the bathroom like anyone else that age. However, if she is too blind to tell with a little bathroom check, I would probably go with a sniff test (also in the bathroom). Blood smells metallic. Vaginal discharge smells sort of salty, but not metallic. And with the sniff test I can not emphasize enough the importance of washing hands PRIOR to going to the bathroom, as well as afterward. Vaginas are moist places, that are highly prone infection.

Also, maybe get her and her girl friends to sort of look out for each other. Leaking through one's pants is something that could happen to anyone new to menstruating (or even not so new to it). Oh,the importance of an extra long sweater to cover all embarrassments at that age, and a good friend to let you know you had leaked through your pad, or around it somehow... or a good friend to just discretely check for you in a moment of paranoia to make certain it is all good.. it can not be underestimated. I wish you and your daughter luck. Teenage-hood is so hard.

Sweet, a qualified responder. Blood does smell matalic, also it dries to form a layer like paint does, that might help

You may not be qualified, but if you didn't respond I don't think anyone would have, so thank you so much for getting the ball rolling.

Menstrual blood doesn't coagulate like normal blood... And if it is drying then it might be a bit too late for her pants. Also vaginal discharge can dry too and consistency wise it doesn't feel much different from dried menstrual blood. But I like your enthusiasm, laconicflow. Cheers! Insert smiley emojicon here. How do blind people emoji? I just wrote it out for the screen reader, but if I had done a colon and half a parentheses would you have understood?
laconicflow 2 points 7y ago
I think so. Imogies are normally read by my screenreader so I think the answer is yes. I really didn't want to get into answering a menstral blood question, was just lurking and saw no one had answered.

From my understanding, Voice Over speaks way too fast for me to be clearly understanding it, the emoji keyboard says what each emoji is, and when Voice Over reads it it will actually say exactly what it is, instead of just "emoji".

As for a colon and right, or left, parentheses, it will either say smiley or frowny, depending on which one it is. Unless it is pushed directly up against punctuation, then it will say cama for some reason.

As for JAWS, I haven't overheard any Emoji talk with it, so I'm not sure.

Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it, and I would have never even thought of the sniff test.

Also please, use closed lid trash cans in bathrooms, because of dogs.

Okay, this is way late.. but my mom read this an wants to add that you should get tampons. It is true, pads suck. My mother says get the teen sized ones in every type of applicator so she can find which ones she likes.. There is a huge variety (I like the smoother plastic applicator). Get in advance, so the period can not sneak up on you both. Also go over tampon disposal. Applicators go in the trash with the wrapper. In cities, with public sewers the used tampons may go down the toilet, however in the country, where people usually have septic tank, the tampon must go in the trash. Also if the house is very old, 100+, even if it is in the city, the tampon should go in the trash. If in doubt, tampon goes in the trash. Preferably wrapped up so sighted people can't see the BLOOD.
