[Advice needed] Help me design activities for Visually Impaired youth! (self.Blind)
submitted by SPACEANDNOISE
Hi everyone!
I am an intern in a non-profit organization that facilitates camps and programs for blind, orphan, and refugee children/adults.
I'm currently working on to design and find some activities for ~12-13 year old blind children. I have few ideas of my own, but I thought that asking you all would be a great way to get much more direct and relevant info.
I'd like to create activities that foster a sense of self worth and empowerment.
Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas!
Thank you in advance!

You'd be surprised what blind kids can do if you let them try. So long as you're not out-right mocking them, anything is probably fine. The point is that they try even if they don't think they can do it. And then add some accommodations where necessary.

Any arts-and-crafts project that's more 3d than drawing/painting. Try working with clay or even paper planes.

Sports using balls that make noise.

Archery. (No, I'm not joking. I'm legally blind and it's a lot of fun)

I can think of so many things, but maybe a little more information on what kind of camp it is? I'm able to think of things ranging from activities to sports haha.

It's a camp for 12-13 year olds focusing on leadership, emotional intelligence, and empowerment! Games and activities that teach some level of those things are what I think would be best.
Thank you!

Try doing some group hands-on activities; one I've seen done and people (kids and adults) enjoy is setting out a tray of various art and craft supplies (yarn, paper, feathers, large hole beads, etc.) and tell a group of 4+ they have 10-15 minutes to create a group design on which they'll be judged.
Another fun one is using different styles and types of music to open up ears and minds to the various emotions music can make us feel; or how differently we might dance to each type.

Giving a parameter that their structure will be judged on helps. Judge it by height. And give each group the exact same starting materials. A pack of gum, some paper towel rolls, string, whatever as long as it is all the same for each group.
