Hey /r/blind, I would love your advice on accessible workplace technology! (self.Blind)
submitted by mygapps
So I am currently undertaking some research into a technology based solution to allow blind and vision impaired people to work independently in a typical office environment and there is a requirement for a system to allow users to book meeting rooms in all the ways that would normally occur, including: pre-booking from computer (I have this sorted) and booking at the meeting room.

I am looking far and wide for a robust solution and would love your advice on what you would expect from a room booking system. The basics would be a screen-reader I guess. Feel free to ask questions also

What's your planned solution for mainstream users to perform in-room bookings? If your approach is to use an off-the-shelf Android or iOS device as a booking kiosk, both have quick shortcuts to enable a screen reader, which means a simple mobile app built with accessibility in mind could be a solution for users with or without a visual impairment. This would also benefit those with disabilities other than a visual impairment, as these platforms offer features for those users, too.

Hi Casey

There is a touch screen product by american company AMX which is built on android and integrates directly with Outlook, google etc (http://www.amx.com/products/RMBK-701.asp) . I will ask them if they can enable the screen reader and whether a speaker is built into the device.

This can be used by mainstream users.

It depends on how much they forked Android. If you can get to the regular OS, then you can go into settings and do it yourself. That being said, if you have a computer-based solution that works outside the location, the solution may just be to set up a computer/phone to access the same portal while on site.

Yea, in this case the AMX panels are running a locked down version of Android. I turned on my voice assist on my android phone and had a play around for a few minutes (5 mins play, 10 mins trying to turn off voice assist!). The time it would take to book a meeting would be a consideration. That is, if it takes 2 minutes to book a room from a dedicated room booking panel versus 30 seconds from a PC.

Does anyone have any ideas of how long it could take?
