Looking for feedback and ideas on solution for blind people (self.Blind)
submitted by LivingITLan
Hi r/blind

I am working on something I think you’ll find very interesting.

I hope I’m not violating any subreddit rules with this post, but if so please let me know.

My organization have developed a solution, that enables blind people to navigate buildings, and outdoor areas with beacons, a dynamic CMS system, and an iPhone, with our app and the voice over function turned on, (as most blind people already have).
The solution is called Blinfo and is currently installed in a number of buildings in Denmark. The managers of these building access the CMS systems, where they can update the message, that each beacon pushes to our app, when a person with this app installed gets close enough to the specific beacon. Right now our system can manage 20 unique beacons, but you can clone the beacons in the CMS systems and thereby have way more than 20 physical beacons.

Now we are trying to develop something you could call a Home Kit or Travel Kit for blind individuals, and this is where I hope, you could provide us with some feedback. By the way, I know a lot of people refer to blind as visually impaired, but our solutions are mostly useful for people who cannot see at all, and therefore, for the sake of clarity I use the term blind.

The idea is that blind people would download the app that we are currently developing and use it in their own home, at work, when traveling or in any other situation we have not thought about yet. The app would be able to do mainly 2 things. First thing. Identify beacons, NFC tags, Wifi modules, other smartphones etc. and record messages which the blind user record and attach to the identified beacons, NFC tag, Wifi module and so on. Second thing. Push the recorded messages when the user gets within a set distance from the beacon, NFC tag etc. Example for clarification. Coming home from grocery shopping with a family member, friend or helper, all the groceries have to go in the kitchen closets and drawers. The different closets and drawers have NFC tags on them, so when you put the groceries in place you record where everything goes with our app. This enables you to evaluate what is coconut milk and what is baked beans even though their shapes are similar, because you have recorded which is in the left and right corner of the closet. Another example. Members of your family purchase a Beacon to put in their key ring, so every time they approach your residence you get a push message so you know who are coming or who entered your house. A third example. You are traveling with friends or family and staying at a hotel. In order to become more independent you have brought along 5 beacons which you place in strategic positions in the hotel (no screws or anything needed - they have an adhesive layer which leaves to marks). After the first day at your destination, you can find your way inside the hotel, in the areas you have rigged with beacons.

So. We are planning on prototyping and testing this solution in the coming 6 months, and then develop the finished product Q1 2017. What do you think about it? Would it be useful? Could you come up with other more important use cases? Other directions we should look into?

Our mission is to make the world more accessible using technology. Of course we need to make money doing so. Otherwise we cannot deliver a great product with continuous support and updates.

We plan on charging a monthly subscription fee for the app, and then support the most used types of beacons, NFC tags, Geo locations etc. These are cheap now and will only become cheaper with time. 3 beacons can be bought for 80 USD and 10 NFC tags for something like 50 USD. In the future we hope that tags like these can be sold with braille text on them.

The monthly subscription fee would be between 6 and 9 USD, which includes support and fair number of tags and beacons controlled from your account.

While developing this Home Kit slash Travel Kit, we will continue to diffuse our building solution to institutions, where many blind and severely visually impaired people come. If you have ideas to places that could be interested in this, please let us know as well.

If you know about any other places online, where we could get feedback, I would be very grateful for these links as well. We are working closely with the blind community in Denmark, and they are thrilled about our buildings product and love the idea about the Home Kit slash Travel Kit idea.

I had a similar project for my university. Basically, based on your disability, it would determine the best route for you on the campus and then help you with going to a room of your choice in university buildings using beacons. Disability services of my university approved this project, and they decided to give it to a group of computer science students as Capstone project. When I checked last at the end of the year, they still hadn't made any progress whatsoever. If new group can't achieve anything next semester, I guess I'll see what I can do by myself.

Sounds cool. Where are you from? It is also our grand plan to make an information system for everyone, with or without disabilities, using beacons, wifi, geotags etc. We start with visually impaired and the move our way to other user groups.

I evaluated blindsquare for our organization but the prospect of maintaining another layer of infrastructure (the bluetooth beacons) meant a whole other layer of planning. We have bluetooth as part of our WIFI network access points but havn't looked into if those would work.

"a whole other layer of planning"
- so you evaluated that their CMS system for their BlindSquare Indoor solution was too difficult to use? Especially for the dynamic messages you would change every day i guess?

Since Blindsquare beacons need specific positioning for landmarking, we would have to have a separate system of installs across campus to maintain specifically for blind square (i.e. changing the batteries every year) I have also been researching GPS based location positioning which would have the prospect of more flexibility than blind square since you could theoretically 'geofence' various features in the environment that didn't have a direct co-relation to a physical beacon

And what were your results of this research? Can geofencing perform with the accuracy you need to guide people from one building to another? Also considering the trees and other obstacles you have in yards you cross from e.g. the canteen to the library?
intrepidia 2 points 7y ago
Well I wouldn't consider a tool such as this a replacement for traditional O&M skills. My research indicates wifi wayfinding isn't quite there yet but shows great promise. Since wifi wayfinding relies on the ping time from the wifi access point and subsequent triangulation with adjacent access points, accuracy can vary. I am personally looking to pilot something when I see a worthy market entrant.

At home and in places where iʻve been to before I remember where things are.
Identifying groceries, medicines etc - thereʻs taptapsee.
Going to new places there are several map solutions that donʻt charge subscriptions.
I use apple maps for walking directions (sometimes no crosswalk though), blindsquare, ariadne etc. I try to remember where things are with some landmark system, but would love to just have a map of my own where i can add the difficult to find bus stops, mailboxes, entrances to places etc.

Beacons would be great in huge places where ifʻs easy to get lost: big offices, malls, airports, and especially hospitals.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Taptapsee is an awesome app. I did not know about this one, so thanks for the hint.

If I understand you correctly you would like to make custom routes to specific locations, which are not a part of Google's or Apple's map apps? So these apps take you to the area with voice over guiding, but they are not able to guide you the last steps to the bus stop, mailbox, entrances etc.?
Unuhi 1 points 7y ago
Yes.
Also just record the frequent routes. So walks around parks etc.
And two feedback/direction modes would be better: audio and haptic. So if it's too loud, just get the taps for direction.
LivingITLan [OP] 1 points 7y ago
Cool. I get your points. If we go in this direction, would it be okay if I contacted you again, to get your inputs and ideas? We are working closely together with the entire blind community in Denmark, but we want to make sure we are creating an internationally applicable solution, so inputs and ideas from someone like you are much appreciated.
Unuhi 1 points 7y ago
Of course.
Glad to help :)

I would not use this at home or work. I don't need technology to tell me where my groceries are. As for traveling, my GDB already gets me where I ask. Others may disagree.
LivingITLan [OP] 1 points 7y ago
I understand - nice that you have a GDB. But could you imagine a technological solution which would make your life as visually impaired even easier, more efficient or just more safe? Maybe something that would boost the freedom your GDB gives you?
LivingITLan [OP] 1 points 7y ago
Thanks you so much for your feedback and sorry for the late reply. I get your points, and understand that the overall feedback is that you do not need such a solution at home. What would you need at home? If you could go imagination crazy what would you wish you had to make life easier, faster, more fun etc.?
