Accessible guitar tuner? (self.Blind)
submitted by Badassmotherfuckerer
Hi!

I'm looking for an accessible guitar tuner, an actual tuner would work, so would an app on the iphone or computer, I already tried Talking Tuner on the iphone, but that didn't work so well.

So I made a tuner from scratch using Arduino. I don't have a guitar, but it seems to work with a tone generator and I also confirmed the guitar sound of my keyboard is in tune. You can hear it in action here: https://youtu.be/IdmQsWYPNIw

Now the question is how to get you one of these. I could maybe give you a shopping list and building instructions. As a finished product it'd be a lot cheaper obviously, but if you buy prototyping parts from Adafruit you can make a ball of wires for $50 https://www.adafruit.com/wishlists/412330 and a battery powered, neat version for $75 https://www.adafruit.com/wishlists/412336

I could also put it together for you, which would cost some extra shipping and time.

Thanks for the offers and thanks for showing me that instructables link in the other comment, I have a friend who might know how to work with that, I'll see if he can make it first, thanks for the help!

I enjoyed my last days of holiday making a PCB for this, which I just ordered from Oshpark. So I can make a few of those and sell them to people for about $20 probably.

How do you imagine that would work?
I mean, how do you want your feedback?
I have a hard time thinking about an intuitive interface.

I'm an electrical engineer with a passion for audio, so this sounds like a fun project if there is nothing like it yet.

Here's the same thing just using a different method.

It seems you forgot the link? I'm assuming you meant the second Youtube result I found. Luckily it has more info including schematics and code: http://lushprojects.com/guitartuner/ This is totally doable.

Something like this is really interesting, but perhaps pretty difficult.

What he did is connect an Arduino to the LED's of an existing tuner. That Arduino then outputs the beeps. He actually managed to cramp all the parts inside the original housing (ok, almost), but if you don't care about an ugly ball of wires, this is actually pretty easy to do.

[edit]: I found an instructable for this one too http://www.instructables.com/id/Guitar-Tuner-for-the-Blind-using-an-Arduino/?ALLSTEPS
The tuner is easy to get on Amazon or eBay.

Couldn't you use a pitch pipe for that?

Yeah I do use a tuning fork, but it's certainly easier just to use a tuner.
