My university just told me that Braille signs for classrooms are no longer required under the building code because so few people use it!
Has anyone else run into this? Being able to find places was the whole reason I started learning Braille.
The school has offered me an OM instructor to help me find my classes, but for everyday things like office hours Braille would be so much easier.

What? If you're in the US, the ADA sure does require it! No idea about other countries though.

Bull. Local codes can't overwrite ADA rules. Otherwise they'd use it also for "we don't need wheelchair accessible parking here, it's a gym." - as in public place, yes you do need to comply with ADA.

Thank you! I will be bringing this up tmrw. I couldn't believe that the bathrooms weren't labeled, much less the classrooms.

I would raise hell over this. That's just ridiculous.

Oh my gosh, that's horrible and such a simple fix for the institution too. Hopefully they resolve this quickly.

What University? If it's Berkley I have the ADA on speed dial.
awesomesaucesaywhat [OP]1 points6y ago
No, it's not. Why is it so hard for people to do the right thing?

Update in case anyone is interested.
Bathrooms do not have Braille signs, but classrooms actually do! It was above the written number instead of below. My bad!

Here in Finland, Braille signs are very rare. Come to think of it I've never read Braille signs in any building ,unles the majority of the people in the building is blind or visually impaired. You almost have to rely on other people all the time, when trying to navigate a new area.

Necessity is the mother of invention. When thoughtless dickheads remove braille from places like bathrooms, go into the wrong one purposely until enough complaints bring it back.

I agree with the sentiment, but I'll leave it to someone else to go brave the urinal room!
charliemyheart1 points6y ago
Yes it is still required though most private schools think they don't have to. If people wanted to fight it they could but many don't, I just plan on avoiding the school like that in my area.

This is a public university. I wish we didn't have to fight things all the time, but I guess I'll get used to it.

I know someone at Iowa state, and some of the issues with some of the rooms, she ending up targeting it so her guide dog might be able to find it. But I am assuming you are like and don't have one (in my case it is as of yet, though).
I would out to them if it were me Braille isn't dead and many still use it and can read it. Though it isn't the huge Braille bibles anymore now it can fit in you pocket.

I'm working on the guide dog process now, but I do have some concerns about having one. Yay guide dogs!

Which school(s)? I have been accepted to TSE, and am waiting on my class date if you have any questions about them I will at least try and answer them.
