What functionalities/apps do you wish your iPhone had to assist you? (self.Blind)
submitted by dmuzzin
Hello everyone. A good friend and I are currently taking a Computer Science course focused on writing software to assist someone who is visually impaired. The whole course is focused on designing a piece of software that makes the life of someone who is visually impaired better and we are currently in the process of brainstorming ideas for our project proposal. We've come up with some ideas already such as a restaurant menu parser which can quickly look at a menu and use Apple's built in VoiceOver functionality to read back the options, but would like some help thinking of other ideas on how to use technology to meet the challenges of being visually impaired. If you have any ideas please let us know! Also if any of you have an idea that our professor approves we would love to stay in touch updating you on our progress with the project and getting feedback!

I agree with the paper money app. Oh and works on UK money. How about something that can tell you what time it is. Not a talking watch but something that vibrates on your phone. If I am somewhere quiet I don't want the talking watch on.😎

My son has a thing that you stick the corner of the money into and it reads the denomination. It buzzes x amount of times per denomination. I think it's one buzz, two for five, three for ten and so on. We haven't used it a lot bc he's not really independent but it is a cool tool for the more independent. It's about the size of a USB reader. I'll see if I can find the name for you if you want it.

Hi the buzzing money reader sounds great. If you come across the name let me know and I will have a look. Thanks

This is an American thing but I bet there is an international version. It can yell (loudly) the denominations or buzz.

Great thanks I will look into it. We do contactless payment over here. Where you just wave your card over the payment machine and you've paid. It's to easy though I'm spending a fortune. LOL

My proposal ended up not getting accepted but those interested in a paper money app should look into LookTel!

An app to recognize paper money would be pretty amazing.

A simple OCR app that would be cheap or free would be lovely. Like take a picture, have the phone recognize the text, allow it to be read by voice or braille display, or forwarded to apps as selectable text.
Yes, there's an app that does it already but the price tag can be prohibitive.

I'd love to have an app to recognize people. Like have a small dot on the shades, sunglasses or whatever face wear you usually use, then use that unintrusively to find out who the person that knows you is.

First thing that comes to mind is tap tap see.
Unuhi 2 points 6y ago
Knfb reader does the OCR thing, taptapsee helps recognize what you're looking at.

But it would not be that appropriate for pointing it at random people for finding out who they are.

Agreed with that. Lol
