I'm thinking of writing a story featuring a blind character. I'm not blind, so how do I write that? (self.Blind)

Also, are there any major mistakes writers writing blind characters make often? You know, like how stupider writers will often make the one smart character completely devoid of charisma and make them only intelligent when it comes to their best field and """"Nerdy stuff"""", and completely ignorant when it comes to what the writer thinks "Really matters"?

Your name made me curious enough to skim your profile. Now I'm wondering if this blind character is going to be in your airbender fanfic? :-)

As for tips, just write the character as a person who happens to be blind. A lot of authors seem to write characters who are blind and just happen to be people. My blindness, while it means I do some things differently, isn't the only thing that defines my identity. The WWW Trilogy probably contains the best blind character in fiction. The Daredevil series on Netflix isn't too bad, either. But ignore the stupid movie!

Yeah, he's going to be in my fanfic. Did you like Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender?

That's actually a show I've never gotten around to. People have told me I might like it, but it has no audio description available. And while I can usually follow shows even without having things described, I just don't enjoy it. I always feel like I could be watching something else, or just reading a book, and getting more out of the experience. I could look up transcripts and do a read-along like I do for MLP I guess, but I haven't yet searched to see if any decent fanscripts exist.

Edit: This prompted me to at least check. So for people who care, the movie $1. And there are OK fan screenplays, that describe most things, $1. There's also a fan website with scripts called Avatar Spirit, but it's, like, the most confusing website ever.

The movie sucks, don't watch it/listen to it. M.Night Shymalaman buggered it up. He tried to condense an entire season of stuff into one movie, and failed horribly. He also made Yue's hair look like a penis.

Hah, OK. I'll start with the show!

I'll go ask around and see if there's an AD thing.

See my edit. I already looked. The movie has it, nothing else. Generally in that situation, I just look at the screenplays while listening.

Sawyer's the best ;)

Augie from Covert Affairs is also a decent representation. He's good at what he does, and happens to have lost his vision (I'm also biased because my organization helped train him for an authentic portrayal)

Blindfolds for a day ;)

I used to regularly piss off my sister as a kid by putting a bandana on like a blindfold and then beating her Zelda-using ass with my Superbombdash-happy Samus. I memorized the size and layout of Final Destination, how far away Samus appears from Zelda when you pick them, what moves kick/blast Zelda where, which moves have an audio cue of some sort to tell me when I missed them and tell me where she DI'd to if I didn't hit her, and I used to literally beat her blindfolded without peeking just to prove I could.

Sorry, you mentioned blindfolds and that came back. I'm not sure if I should have posted that or not, but I've already written it. She's gone now.

Depending on where you live, see if there's a local Guide Dogs for the Blind chapter near you. You could call their administration, explain what you're attempting to accomplish, and ask for a tour. Most Guide Dog campuses offer tours to the public. You may be able to meet some people there that can give you good insights into being blind, and in particular, how to learn to function as a visually impaired individual.

There isn't, but thanks. The blind character I'm writing is going to be on the hero's team, he'll become his best friend and they'll run cons on the local mafia together.
