Controversial Social Media Campaign by Foundation Fighting Blindness (blog.seanmealin.net)

To me, the shittiest part isn't even encouraging people to put on blindfolds, giggle and fumble around for a minute, and feel like they understand what it must be like to be blind. Everyone here in /r/blind/ of course knows that playing "pretend blind" in no way simulates the skills and abilities that an experienced blind person with the right tools and training has. We know that blind people can competently "eat a meal, make your bed," and "get ready for the day." (activities the campaign suggests for your challenge.)

The worst part of the campaign in my opinion is the video on their site simulating blindness.

If you go to the "howeyeseeit" site (I will not link to not promote them) there is a video link (not audio described) which reads "See what it's like to lose your vision." This leads to a youtube video which reads "#howeyeseeit" and "foundation fighting blindness" and then "FOLLOW YOUR KID." It is a park scene with kids in it, and your kid runs off in the video as your field of vision slowly decreases (simulating RP.)

That is offensive and dangerous. We live in a time where blind parents still sometimes get their children taken away or unnecessary evaluations into their personal lives just because they're blind, and where every blind parent has stories of doctors, or social workers, or teachers who question their ability to parent. There are real life consequences to making people believe that a blind parent couldn't safely take their child to the park and supervise them there.

Throwing blind people under the bus by making people think we're helpless and incompetent shouldn't be the way to fundraise for research. It's just not right.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness group here in Canada has some very interesting traits. Often it's associated to people whom have recently lost their vision or the parents of children under same similar conditions. There is more anger and bitterness that pervades their social space then other groups. Using a blindfold to me can be a fear invoking stunt and as is pointed out, in no way informs a sighted persons experience of a blind individuals lived reality.

Wow, I didn't realize it was this messed up. As someone who has RP just reading that made me feel like shit. We have enough barriers socially without these stupid ad campaigns making us look incompetent!

Damn straight!

Another day, another terrible PR "charity" run entirely by and for the sighted. See also: Blind New Worlds, The CNIB, etc. *sigh*

Whats a charity that does a good job?
dmazzoni 6 points 6y ago
The NFB, the ACB, the Braille Institute, the Lighthouse for the Blind, and the RNIB are just a few. Not charities but nonprofit organizations of blind people that do a lot of good.

i wonder which organization makes the most money
fastfinge 2 points 6y ago
Hmmm, good question. Is bookshare a charity? They don't do fundraising much. But at the same time, they are a Non-Profit. So is AMI in Canada. NVDA does an extremely good job of what they do, too!

Anyone who knows the value of computer access for blind people should donate to [NVDA.]
(http://www.nvaccess.org/) Aside from delivering an awesome product that competes with the commercial options and being responsive to the needs of their users, they are doing work that is opening doors and changing lives for people blind who desperately need affordable computer access throughout the world.

Yes, agreed! As a blind person, NVDA is the only blindness organization I donate to. I currently give them $36CAD a month, and that's way less than they're worth. Unfortunately, it's the most I can afford.

Unfortunately, depending on where an organization's money comes from, that organization may have better events shot down for a variety of reasons. My coworkers and I have proposed a number of great ideas that would have had minimal costs but high benefit, but were shot down because the funders/stakeholders disagreed :(

This campaign fails to recognize those like me who have some vision, but are only legally blind. It also makes us look like helpless victims, to b pitied. I hate pity.
