Please comment here so sighted people can actually stop being so ignorant.(reddit.com)

How is it 2016 and so many people don't realize that blind people can use computers? Not only that, but they treat the idea as entirely ludicrous.
Mercury-77 points6y ago
Yeah I am sighted and I don't understand why they think it is so funny. Like a person gives a serious response and all of the comments are just words in all capital letters and random nonsense. Like as if they were saying, "haha get it? It is funny because they lack an ability that I have! So funny!" It's really immature, but then again a lot of the users are in highschool so this is not surprising.
Nighthawk321 [OP]4 points6y ago
Yeah. I made sure to downvote all those posts. Will make great content for /r/downvotesmcgoats.
Mercury-72 points6y ago
Yeah like the entire thread is just unfunny puns and jokes at blind people. Like one user even linked a fake Twitter page for Stevie Wonder and it was just all random letters. In my mind I sarcastically thought, "oh so funny, that joke hasn't been used before!". That thread was really bad. I really wish ask reddit had a permanent serious tag, joke threads are garbage anyways and they ruin any potentially interesting discussions.
Nighthawk321 [OP]3 points6y ago
Yeah I completely agree.
Jepstromeister1 points6y ago
I really don't mind that at all. I actually think it's pretty funny sometimes. But I can't stand the lame blind jokes though.
Nighthawk321 [OP]2 points6y ago
I have no idea TBH. I sometimes worry lol.
-shacklebolt-11 points6y ago
It is worrying. The mindset is not just "I don't know how a blind person could do this," but "it's hilarious that you think a blind person could do this, and I will dismiss the idea offhand!" even when there is clear and easily found evidence that blind people do it all the time.
That sort of mindset negatively affects us in ways that a lot more serious than a reddit thread. I'm not bothered by people asking questions, but I am bothered by people acting like it's completely ridiculous that I could do things I'm entirely capable of.
Nighthawk321 [OP]1 points6y ago
Exactly. Given how common it is on Reddit, it's insulting to a point.
discomonsoon21 points6y ago
As a sighted individual, I actually didn't become aware of software and technologies that aid the blind until recently. And to be fair a lot of sighted people don't really want to figure out how blind individuals actually use the internet.
KillerLag3 points6y ago
Unfortunately, many sighted people make silly assumptions. I've had clients who told me about how sighted people talked REALLY LOUD to them, because they couldn't see >.<
When people see someone using VoiceOver, though, they usually understand a lot faster.
Nighthawk321 [OP]1 points6y ago
Yes, I know exactly what you mean haha. I probably shouldn't have made the post saying that sighed people are ignorant. They just made silly assumptions.
KillerLag2 points6y ago
I think one of the more annoying assumptions (usually for the elderly) is that they can't see anything, when they are just low vision (from AMD or glaucoma). I've had so many family members telling me "She's faking, she can still walk around!". I then point out that AMD usually causes fine detail loss, but enough peripheral to still travel.
claudettemonet2 points6y ago
I'm not there yet... but RP is an opposite problem. I will not be able to navigate well with severe tunnel vision, but I'll likely still be able to read for a while after going legally blind.
KillerLag1 points6y ago
Yeah, I've had people like that as well. Need a cane to get around, but can read a sign across the street (fairly rare, though).

I found your verbage entertaining.
Nighthawk321 [OP]1 points6y ago
Oh in most comment in the askreddit thread?
claudettemonet1 points6y ago
Well, I meant specifically in titling this thread, but generally, yes. You are entertaining to read.

This sub now has an ad in the sidebar for blind awareness month. So I'm saving all of my "we use screen-readers" comments for the influx of people asking us this question that is bound to follow. Just keep linking to our FAQ for Sighted readers and be happy. :-)
Nighthawk321 [OP]1 points6y ago
Yup.
Jepstromeister2 points6y ago
Man! I was on fire in that thred. Got something like 16000 carma for that thred alone. Thank you Reddit!

For people who use Braille keyboards: How hard is it to use Braille keyboards and what is your WPM?
claudettemonet7 points6y ago
I think most people here use normal keyboards and some sort of screen reading software, like JAWS or NVDA. I feel like braille keyboards are a bit older generation. Tommy Edison uses one. You should check out his youtube channel. He is funny. I think he deomstrates it in one video.
KillerLag1 points6y ago
At work, I got a hold of a Braille keyboard..... I did not find it very comfortable to use. maybe because I'm just used to the smooth keys, but it felt weird for typing for any length of time.
Nighthawk321 [OP]3 points6y ago
I doubt any of us use braille keyboards. I probably type at least 100 wpm.
Here you go :) Tommy demonstrates a Braille keyboard/typewriter. If the link doesn't work just Google "Tommy Edison How a blind person writes braille."

I would guess sighted people who visit this sub take at least a modicum of interest in the life of blind people, so they are probably less ignorant than average.
ihateavg1 points6y ago
i still dont understand how blind people really use their computers, I saw a nice blind man make a sound clip of how to use a computer but: 1: I couldnt understand his voiceover thing 2: I cant visualize what is happening (yes, i know there is nothing to visualize) 3: part of the experience of using a modern computer is having a GUI, without the GUI its a totally different system, i wouldnt be able to navigate a computer without it even if i could see stuff. 4: I asked the blind dude for a video but he sent me audio, i guess they dont know what the difference is ._. there is a huge difference though. Not sure how he would film his keyboard and monitor tho.
Nighthawk321 [OP]1 points6y ago
I know you mean well by asking this question, but there are a few things I need to address. When you say they on /r/blind, you're saying that all of the blind people on this sub don't know what a video is. Plus, all blind people do know what a video is. Just because we can't see, does not mean that the thought of seeing a video or even knowing what a video is is somehow unimaginable to us, haha. I didn't want to come off as rude at all, but I had to point that out so you don't receive a bunch of hate, haha. That being said, I made a Youtube VIDEO, explaining how blind people use computers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsglR8Y26jU&t=2s
ihateavg1 points6y ago
I dont understand how you play video games, i saw part of a video and you said something like because the flash was moving towards you but how did you know?
Nighthawk321 [OP]1 points6y ago
You said you saw part of the video. Cmon man, I have a video clearly labeled, "How Blind People Play Mortal Kombat".
ihateavg1 points6y ago
oh, i dont have a supercomputer reading every title for me so bear with me while i find it :P
ihateavg1 points6y ago
Holy crap your childhood was fucked up. Also i would imagine a person born blind would have a lot more trouble understanding the difference between a video and audio clip. Idk though i've never met a blind person IRL
Nighthawk321 [OP]2 points6y ago
No. Blind people aren't less intelligent, they just can't see, haha.
ihateavg1 points6y ago
but the difference between a video and an audio clip is that you can see the video!
ihateavg1 points6y ago
thanks lol watching youtube vids at 2x did not prepare me at all for listening to what you guys hear. If you don't mind me asking why would a blind person have FRAPS? (it tells you how many frames per second you are getting) You dont even need a monitor :o
Nighthawk321 [OP]2 points6y ago
Dude, how else am I suppose to make videos? Do you expect me to just post audio clips, to a video hosting site?
ihateavg0 points6y ago
what do you mean? does FRAPS capture your screen? FRAPS says how many frames per second your GPU is rendering i thought :o (oh and do you have a monitor? like physically?)
gelema51 points6y ago
So apparently this exact question was asked before, and the current OP (not original OP) also copied one of the most up voted comments. It's entirely a karma scam.
fastfinge1 points6y ago
Yup. I used to have a keyword search for "blind" run on Ask Reddit daily, so I could pop in and answer the questions. After the same question was posted 3 times in one month, and the duplicate questions had comments in them that were copies of my answer to the first question, I gave it up. I have no problem answering questions, but I have no interest in being someone's karma pump. These days I stick to this sub. We're not hard to find, and if someone really does have a question about blind people, I figure they can spend the 30 seconds required to find a better place for it than Ask Reddit.
