Do blind people save on electricity? (self.Blind)
submitted by drflanigan
I don't know if this is offensive to ask, but ever since I saw a movie about a blind girl with the lights in her apartment on I had this question on my mind.

Do you use the lights in your house assuming you live alone? And if you do, why? Is it to deter burglars?

Well I can not speak for the entire Low Vision and Blind community as we tend to have a range of conditions that make us blind. I do not know what movie you are speaking of but I can tell you that some of us do use the lights and some do not. The saving of money I guess could be a potential but I do not think is that significant of a change as most of the heavy energy vampires are your stove, washer and dryer, toaster and AC Units.

To answer your indirect question we do use lights when we live by ourselves. The reason is we might not see but we can sense light at some level and helps us keep a circadian rhythm.

Ah, makes sense. The movie was a terrible horror movie with Jessica Alba called "The eye" I think.

How does that work?

Lets say your optic nerve is damaged preventing your brain from being able to processes the light that hits the retina. Your retina still senses the light even if you can not see it. So your body recieves the stimuli from light. I hope that explains your question.

That makes sense, thanks!

Even though I'm legally blind, I can still tell the difference between night and day. I tend to leave the light on in the room I'm situated in and the rest of my apartment remains dark. Very rare I do anything in my place without first turning the light on.

It's like when having the TV on. I can't see it, but it seems more natural to me having it on even though I'm only able to hear it.

My electric bill averages a little over $40/month.

My electric bill has definitely gone way down ever since I lost my vision. I only use the lights when I have people in my apartment, and when my girlfriend is home. I hardly use my desktop computer anymore and mainly use my phone and laptop for computing and Internet purposes, and I only really use the television when my sharks are playing and when people are around to watch things with me.
