Device for highlighting the line you're reading (self.Blind)
submitted by KantArgueWithThat
My aunt had a stroke, and since that her vision has been getting worse. At her job she needs to read a lot of material, most of which is on computer.

But while she can still read, screens cause her trouble. She always loses focus of which line she's just reading.
Therefore, she's started printing out all this stuff.

What I'd like to know: Is there some kind of device that can be clipped to the bezel of the monitor and move up and down, to highlight the line she's on?
I'd imagine it to be like a ruler made of see-through plastic, with a system that allows it to be attached to the side of the monitor, and slide up and down easily.

Hope my explanation is clear enough, otherwise just ask for clarification.

There's software that does this, like ZoomText or ReadWrite

Thanks, looked at ZoomText, but it seems like they just magnify the image?

That's not quite what I had in mind, her problem is not the size of signs (she reads stuff just fine on printed paper), but that on a screen she loses focus on which line she's reading.

ReadWrite seems to be a weblog about technology news, or was there a software of the same name I missed?

Sorry, I meant Read&Write from TextHelp: https://www.texthelp.com/en-us

ZoomText does a lot more than magnify, it can highlight one sentence or one line at a time as you read, and even read out loud.

Thank you, I'll recommend it to her, maybe she'll use the trial version.

Gotta ask though, so there is no hardware solution like I proposed?

Was reasonably sure I saw that somewhere, but I also might have dreamt it after using my drafting board for too long; it has that kind of ruler I wanted.

No idea about the hardware, but as far as software goes, you do not need to use the magnification feature on zoomtext in order to enable the focus-enhancing features (such as a line under or box around the portion of text you are reading) or to have it read selections of text out loud for you to enhance understanding and focus. It is probably excellent software for the situation you are describing, if it is set up correctly for her needs.

Depending on the size of her monitor your could always attach a ruler in the way you mentioned. Maybe with rubber bands, or some sort of side clip.

I haven't seen something like that but I'd try a site like maxiaids.com to get an idea of what's out there for low-vision aids.
