For FAS, roughly 60% of cases have underdeveloped optic nerves (the nerve that connects the eye to the brain). That is likely the something that isn't connected. But as you just said, you can see a flash from a flashlight, so you can see **something** rather that nothing at all. While medically, there may be nothing that can be done now, future therapies may be able to repair that damage.
In the meantime, you really should talk to your eye doctor about it. Unless there is a good medical reason, most doctors wouldn't remove the eye.
