Smithing hammers and swords and knives and stuff in a forge?

Is this for a character in a novel? Carpenter might be better. I know at modern blind training school they teach you how to woodwork, you have to make a box. (Well the blind training school in my area anyway).

How big is the box?
claudettemonet1 points6y ago
I'm not sure yet.
Mordrimbor1 points6y ago
What's in the box?!
claudettemonet1 points6y ago
Eh..... idk. Whatever you put in it. I don't need blind training yet. They just told us that's something they do at the school. They make boxes blind, with all the power tools and everything. And if you are not totally totally blind, you wear a heavy duty blindfold for your time at the school so you don't developed bad habits by rely on your remaining vision which is usually very unreliable. Idk if you have seen any of the comments about realistic hallucinations in people's blind-spots... but yeah. A thing. In the spots I can't see I sometimes see the objects that I know are there, but for some reason, they are always more colorful. Like a black thing becomes maroon, a silvery thing will be much more blue, almost teal.

Also yes.

Also think about the tools he would need to be a carpenter.. special measuring devices he could read with his hands.. maybe a drop string level with a mark he could feel with his hands to ensure the cabinets are hung level... idk why I am so caught up in the minutiae of this blind carpenter's life... well hope that helps.

How do I make scenes of a cartpenter carpenting epic?
claudettemonet1 points6y ago
Kewl. Yeah I think a medieval blind carpenter, mainly making furniture and cabinetry, would work well. He would have connections across the various classes of the town. It would be good. Making simple hope chests and tables for the poorer families and ornate cabinetry and dinning room sets for the wealthy.
You could even have a bit about how his father was the blacksmith, but checking the work when it was red hot was impossible, so he apprenticed with the carpenter in town, who only had daughters. Once he had surpassed the master carpenter, the master carpenter realized his potential and left the woodshop to him in his will. Or something.. or could be more tragic.. like the carpenter was older and all his sons had died in the crusades or whatever long standing conflict is happening in the story.

Well, apparently they're trying. Maybe contact the person who posted $1 a while back, to find out if he made any progress.
claudettemonet1 points6y ago
No the potential for a really well developed character and a setting, which enables you to show instead of tell... that is what is epic.. the potential for really good writing is epic. I have no idea what you want to do with the plot.. so idk if the story itself will be an epic adventure or not... but the writing... could be epic.

I did know of a blind guy who did wrought iron and glass blowing. He was a welder by trade before losing vision due to RP. Some elements if smithing could be done but a big aspect is dealing with variability and inspecting a hot piece is problematic. Adapting to use indirect measures would be only partly effective.
Not to disuade you but you may be limited in what you can forge . For knives a belt grinder might be an alternative.
