What's your opinion on sighted people doing cosplays of blind characters?(self.Blind)
submitted by Throwawaytumc261
I'm aware that carrying a white cane as a sighted person is illegal in some states, but I wanted to know if you think it's disrespectful if a sighted person were to cosplay, say, Daredevil and carry a white cane. I'm talking just carrying it next to oneself, not using it as a visually impaired person would.
Edit: I'm asking because I want to cosplay Terezi Pyrope from Homestuck. The full cosplay includes a white cane because she's blind.

My opinion of sighted people doing cosplays of blind characters are no different than those who cosplay characters of sight. Cosplay is basically dressing up as your favorite character and I can understand that one would do so if they admire characteristics of a character. There is a character named Lee Sin from a video game called "League of Legends" who is a blind monk and he demonstrate great fighting abilities with the assistance of sound waves and echo-location. I have seen many cosplays of Lee Sin and truth to be told, these cosplayers are not trying to be disrespectful or rude. They do it because they admire the character.

What about someone carrying a white cane around? Do you think it'd be offensive?
Dyshonest11 points6y ago
Not offensive at all. Anyone who is offended by that is trying too hard to be offended. Go for it, enjoy the experience, take pictures for memories!

Is this a different spin on that SJW who said white people can't cosplay as black characters?

Not necessarily

Not sure how people will answer, but speaking as a monocular person I don't mind a bit when two-eyed folks dress up as pirates with eye patches - honestly I hope the eyepatch gains status as a cool accessory since I get tired of 'passing' and would love to wear a patch.

What do you think of Big Boss costumes?

I don't have a problem with it. I'm sure someone could make it offensive if they tried (like playing to blind stereotypes or something), but other than that I don't have a problem.

It shouldn't matter as long as you don't use a cane that looks official then I think you should be good. I don't mind, do what ever as long as you are not making fun of anyone or any thing like that. Do whatever.

Fair point. I had to check because people are offended a lot these days. Also, a lot of people who were asked similar questions responded that cosplaying disabled characters is downright appropriating disabled culture.

The only way I'd have a problem is if you were conning people. Using your cane to try and get free bus rides in cities like Toronto that offer that, or asking for money/donations to some charity, or something. But otherwise, I don't care. Every actor who has played Daredevil was sighted. If I was bound and determined to be upset about something, I'd probably be upset about that, rather than at cosplayers. I mean, it would be nice to have more blind actors on screen! But I can't even really bring myself to care about that as deeply as I perhaps should.

But just carrying one around a comic-con without using it, and making it clear it's just a prop, would be fine then? Thank you.
fastfinge2 points6y ago
Yeah, that's fine.

there is more than one blind character? I only know of DareDevil.. And it would look odd just a room of him...

Yeah, Terezi from Homestuck. It's a webcomic, there's a reading of it on YouTube if you're interested.
