What's it like owning a guide dog? (self.Blind)
submitted by TempestheDragon
I'm particularly wondering about care, what they can help you with, and how they're different from non-guide dogs.

Also, if any of you have cool stories to tell about your guide dogs, that will be awesome, too! :)

I just got a guide dog a few months ago. She's extremely smart, smarter than your average dog. I've always wanted one after my regular dog had passed. Now that I have her, she brings out the best in me and it's nice to know I always have someone by my side.

The biggest difference between her and using a cane is what she's able to avoid. If I'm walking in a busy city with my cane, it constantly gets caught on people's legs, outside restaurants, etc. With Dixie, she automatically leads me around them; it makes me think the world is a lot neater than it actually is, haha.

Another aspect where she helps me tremendously is socially. Like I've said many other times before, being blind makes it difficult for people to feel comfortable around me. Now that I have Dixie, I have people approach me left and right. I'm sure at some point it will get annoying, but I'm enjoying it in the mean time.

$1 a video I put on Youtube of Dixie and I.
