Increasing accessibility of board games. (self.Blind)
submitted by turn0
Hello all,

I am a board game designer. Over the past few years a big push in the community has been to increase the accessibility and inclusiveness of board games. One early change was with iconography and specific color selection to help with color blindness. Another change was to minimize language dependence.

What can a designer do to increase the accessibility to the blind community? How can we make printed materials easier to convert into a format usable for those with limited or no sight?

You should contact the folks at $1. They specialize in designing kits to make mainstream board games accessible. So they'd probably know more about the challenges that come with that than random players would. If they haven't made a game accessible because of design issues, blind players aren't likely to find out about it.

Offer braille instructions and add a braille element to any cards or game pieces that might be included with the game. While it may mar the design aesthetic of a game, QR codes are fantastic for making a lot of information accessible through a tiny medium.

As previously mentioned, make the game instructions available online, including descriptions or any text included in the cards or make an accessible online quick reference guide. Don't rely solely on images to explain gameplay.

A handful of games I have have links in their printed materials to watch actual playthrough of games including audio commentary on the rules. This was very useful for my blind friend who would rely on us giving a rundown of the rules so she could join in.

That would let her listen to a play through ahead of time so that she understood all the mechanics without having to have one of us explain and hopefully catch all the rules.
