CNIB EmployAbility - Interview PSA (Described) (youtube.com)

I helped them with that particular ad, and they actually worked very hard to make it authentic. The people with vision loss are all played by people who actually have vision loss, and the other ad was respectful to the guide dog.

Glad to hear! Maybe CNIB is turning over a knew leaf? They lost my support in the 90's and early 2000's, when they had a fully sighted President, and changed the slogan to "vision health, vision hope". Guess those of us who have no vision and never did are hopeless and screwed, then! I won't be involved with an organization under that slogan. The day when the CNIB lost the library and it was transferred over to CELA was an extremely happy one, for me. I can now say I don't use any services from the CNIB.

John Rafferty only joined the organization in 2009...

Yeah, the sloagn was not a popular one. The next one is even worse, in my opinion (it hasn't been released publically yet, but when it was announced at an internal meeting, everyone hated it). One thing I've learned is that naming things by committee leads to some of the worst names I've ever heard :S

CNIB didn't lose the library, they've been trying to get the government to fund it for a long time. Part of the reason for the transfer to CELA was for the integration with the public system. The government had refused for the longest time, and the CNIB library almost had to be shut down because of that. It wasn't until the public campaign that it got enough attention the government agreed to pay for it.

> John Rafferty only joined the organization in 2009...

Yes, you're right. I had 1999 in my head for him, for some reason. Memory plays tricks, doesn't it?

> CNIB didn't lose the library

Well, however it happened, CNIB no longer controls the library. As they're an organization who's goals and values I don't support, that makes me happy. Don't get me wrong. Good people worked at the CNIB Library, many of whom I knew and liked, and I hope they got jobs with CELA. But I now no longer have to perform the gymnastics of "I love the CNIB Library, but I dislike the CNIB" when stating my opinion. It's a relief.

> The next one is even worse, in my opinion

I've been sitting here trying to come up with anything worse than the current one, and I've got nothing. "Helping the helpless", maybe. Or "only vision matters", or something. Those aren't worse, though. They're just as equally offensive as the one it's got now.

Edit: I also want to ad that I'm talking about the organization CNIB as a hole. I recognize good people do work there, who are trying their best, and I'm sure you're one of them. Please don't take this as a personal insult. Every bad organization is full of good people. It just takes the two percent at the top to do a few misguided things and send an organization off down the wrong path.

Trust me, the slogan is.... bad >.< (I guess it will depend on your opinion when you hear it, but everyone I know, whether sighted or blind, has disliked it the second it was announced).

I'm not sure who exactly "controls" the library, but almost everything is still being done in the CNIB building. As far as I know, we still do all the production work, and CELA is the ordering portion. Even all the CDs are mailed from CNIB (digital medium I believe is stored on library servers).

I know what you mean. I don't take it as an insult, but because I have some knowledge of what happens behind the scenes, I try to clarify. My wife used to work for CNIB and worked closely with upper management, so I ended up learning a lot more than normal. I also visit the other departments a lot to see how things are done (and sometimes have them Braille stuff out for us... our 25+ year old Braille printer just died)

This is a pretty good PSA, surprising from CNIB! But...why does it sound like they got the BBC to do the audio description? And why does the employer's voice sound so much like the lead character of corner gas? Those are just little amusing distractions, though. At least the PSA itself is good, something I normally can't say about CNIB's ads begging for donations that they can then misuse in $1.
