Blind 4th grader fights for braille books: district told her it would no longer pay for her braille (abc13.com)

It's terrible that this is still such a common issue in 2016. It isn't acceptable that so few blind children growing up in even developed countries are given a sufficiently comprehensive education in braille and timely access to braille textbooks and school texts (as well as access to comprehensive training in blindness skills in order to be able to complete an education and succeed in life.)

I hope that one way or another, she gets the books that she needs. It sounds like she has parents who are really strong advocates for her getting access to braille, which is half the battle won already.

Public schools can fucking suck sometimes.

When I was in middle school, I had to fight to get my accommodations (luckily my mom was/is a kickass at getting what I need). (I can see about 3-5 feet directly in front of me, no periphrial vision)

I had some "professional" come in to evaluate my vision...no shit, her report was more or less "He laughs at the right parts in a movie, and he didn't walk into walls, so he's fine."

And then they decided to cut off my accommodations because I was getting good grades...even though I had good grades because I had the accommodations.

Ended up switching school districts and moving across town. That wasn't the only reason we moved, but it was one of the major reasons.

Dumb fucks.

Hope everything works out for this person.
