Best way for texting for text to voice software to recognize? (self.Blind)
submitted by caverunner17
Forgive me if this is a stupid question. Made a new friend yesterday who is blind. I know he can get and send text messages using a text to voice software on his phone.

I've never used one, nor know how they work -- but are there any tips to send messages that work best?

I assume keeping it short and to the point using simple vocab helps, but is things like typing out numbers (like four in the afternoon instead of 4PM) better?

Just send a normal text message like you would to anyone with vision. The screen readers are very advanced and are quite adept at reading back normal speech. They will even read back smileys and Emojis. However, definitely stay away from text speak or unnecessarily shortening words like "u" and watch your spelling. If it doesn't make sense when speaking it aloud, then it won't generally make sense using a screen reader.

Great! Thank you. Reading aloud to yourself first is a great idea.

I've never communicated with a visually impaired person via text before, and wanted to make sure I wouldn't be causing any difficulty on their end.

Have a great weekend!

Likely they are using an iPhone. VoiceOver on there is very good.
