Blind mother in APS dispute gets free rides for kids (investigations.blog.ajc.com)

I wish they explained earlier in the article why she doesn't walk her kids to school. It isn't just that she's blind, but that the road has no sidewalk and a lot of traffic. With younger kids I can see why she would be uncomfortable walking it, even sighted.

That is just disgusting from the school. Even if the mother moved there on her own accord like the people in the comments are saying, it's not like she could be aware of the lack of a safe route without someone telling her (this is for those here who do have at least partially working eyesight).

On top of that, the range of a mile is way to large. I'm an adult and a walking distance of a kilometre is already a lot for me at walking speed (we're talking 20 minutes or longer). A mile is even longer than that. I can only imagine how tired children who live on the edge of that range must be when they walk to school, especially children under the age of 12 years old. No wonder the education system in the U.S. is screwed if that is how difficult schools/the government make it to even get education.

When I moved to the east coast of the us I was so surprised that if you lived a mile out from the school you were bussed in. In my neighborhood in California busses are done mostly for diversity and you need to live like an hour away. Everyone I knew either got driven to school around 7am or was dropped off early for school supervision programs at 6 so their parents could go to work. It is definitely different all over the country, but I am glad this woman's kids now have fairly reliable transport to school.
