How Do Blind People Exercise Regularly? (self.Blind)
submitted by 310BrownGuy
Hi. I don't mean to be offensive in anyway. I made a new friend who is blind recently at college. He has someone who assists him going through school and navigating the bus system. He's a pretty physically fit guy too.

I was wondering how people who are blind are able to exercise regularly? Do you people need a very specific gym? Are there blind friendly gyms or particular exercises? He says that he runs on a treadmill and does an elliptical, and occasionally lifts weights, but mostly does things like push ups or sit ups and pull ups. I'm wondering if there are other activities that are popular for blind folks or are easily doable outside of blind specific sports. I want to invite my friend to join me and my other gym buddies, but I want to make sure that I've done my research properly and don't embarrass him or make him do something that he is uncomfortable with doing.

Thanks in advance. I just want to try to be respectful because I have no clue what is "possible" in a totally non-condescending way that could work as a good group activity. Thanks.

Judo is easier than Karate for an example.

My best friend is blind and was an NCAA D1 athlete (track). She would lift, run, practice, cross train, everything. And do it without a guide or dog or cane. She's quite the athlete. She memorizes the layout of her training facility and just goes from there basically. Every once in a while, she'd misjudge a box jump and hit her shin or stub her toe, but those sort of injuries were few and far between.

Edit: for the record, she has zero eyesight. Also, I've come to the conclusion that she is 100% capable of doing everything I can do (usually *better* than I can do it), except for painting...cuz smudge marks, ya know?

If you guys are doing cardio or weights at the gym, there's probably nothing that he can't do as well as a sighted person there. Of course if it's an exercise he's never done before he would need someone to describe it for him or show him, but that's about it.

Are there specific sports you and your friends also do together? I can try to answer any more specific questions.

Thanks. I didn't plan on doing anything extreme. Would swimming be too much? The pool has those lane lines for what its worth.

I mean, I don't know if *he* swims, but blind people in general can swim at any level. Honestly, I would just ask him to join you and if there's something he finds difficult, he can tell you! Approaching it from the "he can probably do this" angle will yield better results than the "can he do this?" angle.

Good point. I just didn't want to fuck up somehow. Thanks.

It's awesome that you're asking this question, and the fact that you're asking probably means you won't. Don't worry about it!

My stepdad meets with a friend three times a week and they go on a tandem bicycle ride and lifts freeweights.
