Idea for an app for blind people (self.Blind)
submitted by floppybad
Hey r/blind, I saw an idea $1 and was wondering if it would actually be useful to someone visually impaired?

The idea is an app on the smartphone that uses Google's Cloud Vision API to analyse frames from a live video camera feed, and uses it to describe key objects or read out a menu or use facial recognition to describe expressions. I imagine the cell phone would need to be chest mounted or something to keep the hands free and and some earbuds so you could hear the audio.

Just thought it was interesting and wanted to hear /r/blind's thoughts on it!

Apps like this already $1. Though that app tries to do everything on the phone, because streaming over data would be hugely expensive. If you don't need/want real time, $1 works by sending photos to the cloud. Much cheaper to send a single photo than livestream.

I recently tested similar software for another company, specifically in regards to facial recognition created live from the camera feed, and it was extremely awkward and useless. Running around, pointing your camera at people, everyone just thinks you're taking a photo of them so they are either put off by it or they just stand and smile, waiting for you to tell them that their picture has been taken. With it being so awkward, I also then quickly realized that I really didn't care about facial recognition/expressions when attempting to interact with people. Figuring out what objects are around me might be sort of interesting, but constantly running around looking like you are invading everybody's privacy is definitely a turn off for the technology.

A guy on the metro yelled at me the other day because he thought I was taking his photo and then ignoring him when he apparently winked at me.

Like, dude, I'm just trying to check my email using zoom without finding headphones to use voiceover.

I can't imagine how awkward it would be to actually be taking photos of people. Not to mention their reactions!
