Is there a subreddit to make friends? (self.Blind)
submitted by Brobinson2002
Hello my name is Ben. I am 14 and 2 months old. I am blind and my hearing is limited. My brother is starting college and I would like to talk to someone else. I have looked at the teenager reddit but I do not think I will belong there.Thank you.

Hi Jack, nice to meet you. Do you know how to send private messages? I have been able to reply to one but I am unsure of how to start them.

OP, /r/r4r is an 18+ dating subreddit, you probably don't want to make a post there.

I thought so when I looked at it earlier. There were still some interesting posts to read!

Hello :) Are you looking forward to the weekend?

Has nothing to do with blindness or anything, but I'm fond of r/CasualConversation. People post topics that will start nice discussions, other people comment with their replies, and a nice back and forth happens. I prefer to sort the posts by new, there, if it's possible to do that with your screen reader (I'm sighted, so pardon my ignorance), because in front page threads there's usually so many comments that the original poster isn't replying anymore, while if it's new-ish a response is almost guaranteed. I suppose it's not friends, per say, but it's certainly nice social interaction.

Why not? You are a teen!

But here are some resources to find people online and offline:

- https://www.zonebbs.com/ has a teen topics board

- NFB has a [slate pals]
(https://nfb.org/nopbc-slate-pals) program that allows you to be matched with similar-aged kids (up through 12th grade) to write braille letters to.

- [NFBnet]
(http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo) has many blind students lists, as well as state lists, hobby specific lists, etc.

- You can try looking up local blindness organizations which may have youth activities, as well as larger things (like the NFB or ACB national conventions) where you can make blind friends from all over the country.

- You can find friends based on your interests. For example, I visit Harry Potter forums because I really like Harry Potter and having something in common breaks the ice

- You can find local friends outside of school by joining activities! A book club, scrabble club, chess club, swimming and many sports, etc will be accessible to you and you can use them to make sighted friends as well.

Thank you for your information it is very helpful. I have some trouble understanding the conversations on the teen reddit but I do like reading the threads. I am very interested in the slate pals program, I will look into applying. My aunt does not have much time to drive me places but joining a chess club sounds like fun.
