Looking for blind people to test our web app(self.Blind)
submitted by nihaokitty
I'm a designer for a personalized learning startup. We want our software to be accessible to blind people and would like to recruit people who solely use screen readers (e.g. JAWS) to use websites. You would be compensated with a $15 Amazon gift card for 30 minutes of your time. You do not need any background in web development and do not need to prepare, but you will be asked to think out loud while using our web app and provide honest feedback. Please PM me for details.
**More info** We're not sure if we're coding the web app the way that blind people actually prefer, especially with aria-live regions.
Our guess is that aria-live should not be used for a whole page content. If a screen reader starts reading the new page when the screen switches to a new quiz question it might be too overwhelming. We're coding it in a way that the screen reader only tells users that the page has been changed, and it's up to them to navigate to the main content (e.g. the question and multiple choice options).
I hope I’m not violating any rules, but if so please let me know!

I can talk to the technology department at the local blind training center (they are friends). We may be able to get a whole group of people for you. Since they would all be in the computer lab, there could be open and varied discussion.
I personally do not use JAWS, I use Zoomtext fusion, because I still have some vision. But I know Kelly and Luis would likely be happy to help out and there are a lot of profoundly blind people at the center... along with many computers.
The advantage here would be, that you would got a group that is less than computer savvy in varying degrees.

You're correct about aria. I'm traveling for business this weekend, but I'm available any time after Wednesday, if that works for you. I use Chrome with $1. Unfortunately, I don't own JAWS, so can't test with it.
Our mission is to provide everyone with access to large- scale community websites for the good of humanity. Without ads, without tracking, without greed.
