Blindness and Public Health (self.Blind)
submitted by aislinnanne
I'm a nursing student with a blind dad and a son who may one day be blind (I carry x linked RP) so issues within this community have always been important to me. I'm trying to write a paper for my public health class about public health interventions designed to reach blind adults. The thing is, I'm only finding public health strategies aimed at preventing blindness. That's a perfectly valid thing to do but does nothing to help those who are already blind. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there that might have some resources they thought would be useful.

Specifically, my assignment is to discuss disaster preparedness concerns within a population of my choosing and identify a public health strategy to help this group be more prepared should a disaster strike their community. I am writing about the transportation needs of blind people in west central Florida facing a mandatory evacuation as the result of an approaching hurricane. I'm looking for ways to help inform them of the resources that are available and educate them about their rights. I have found just about everything but I'm not having much luck finding any research on outreach for this community.

If you have any thoughts on the matter, I would love to hear them!

Have you contacted your local blind agency about that? It may also be through FEMA, not sure. (https://www.fema.gov/office-disability-integration-and-coordination)

Up here in Ontario, most of the services are provided through CNIB or BALANCE. For disaster preparedness specifically, I recall seeing some brochures from a provincial agency (in this case, the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services). https://www.emergencymanagementontario.ca/english/home.html

Here is a link specifically deal with disabilities.

Hope that helps!
