Vision qualification for a guide dog (self.Blind)
submitted by TurtleKnife
Hi Reddit. I have been doing some research about guide dogs the past few months. I have come to the conclusion that I am in the "gray area" as far as my vision goes. I am thinking of not applying.

Have you talked to the school admissions departments or are you basing your conclusions only on their admissions websites?

For low vision users the evaluation of suitability will be specific to your actual case and your mobility challenges and goals. Don't assume that it is only based on your vision in optimal conditions. If you situationally would get great benefit using a guide dog then you would be a candidate. Examples include narrow field of vision, loss of central vision, night blindness (rod-cone distrophy) and many other conditions. Also, if your eye condition is on a path of degeneration then you would also be considered to provide opportunity to train and practice while you have usable vision. (Having some vision can be useful, though certainly not essential, for working through problems such as relieving and overhead clearances with a new dog).

Your vision should not extend that your vision would not over ride the guide dogs decision.

Your vision is 20/400 to 20/800 with substantial field of vision loss. You'd likely meet **any** realistic vision qualification if you were willing and motivated to use the dog correctly as an o&m tool and to improve your o&m skills.

It sounds like you're still trying to talk yourself out of trying, though.

The reason why it sounds like I am trying to talk myself out of it is because my O&M instructor seems like she is trying to talk me out of it. Don't take my word for it but I think that is what she is trying to do based on our conversation on the topic.

You are a hazard to yourself and others traveling around with no mobility aid at your current level of vision. If that is a cane or a dog is up to you and your motivation level, but it is not dependent on your vision being "too good."

(And if you aren't seeing eye to eye with your O&M instructor, work to get another one! Or get extra training elsewhere, like through the many summer programs that offer training! If you would like suggestions where to look, let me know.)

Visual accuity by itself isn't the only criteria. 20/800 can be quite variable sometimes (I've encountered people's vision listed at HM who can still read), and it would really depend on how you use it (especially with your peripheral fields). If you are interested, you should contact the schools and talk to them about it.
