Are there any police jobs for people with low vision? (self.Blind)
submitted by bitcornonthecob
I've always wanted to be a cop, but I know that just can't happen. I'm wondering if other jobs would be available. Like, can I just skip the street patrol and be a detective or something?

Unlikely you can just jump to becoming a detective, you usually need to go through tha ranks to build up experience.

However, I personally have worked with two people (one low vision, one totally blind) who do work for the police. The totally blind person is a translator (he speaks Italian and another language, and I know he usually translates for organize crime related stuff).

The low vision person works in a police warehouse. I can't give too many details about him, but they were able to make adaptations so he could do his job.

In US I seem to have all doors closed. I could go with languages, as English in only my third, but being citizenship-impaired nothing is open. :(

Yeah, sometimes there are more requirements than just vision.

I came across this. Did you read this?

But law and layers or judges are a different field (at least how i think). More laws and textbooks etc, less action and investigation. :-/

You may want to think about why you want to become a police officer, then. If you are looking to become a police officer for the action, you might be surprised.....

Also, there may be other factors that will prevent you from becoming an officer. Most states do require a valid license, as well as physical fitness minimiums. Have you checked into those as well?

One of the dispatchers at my county's state police post is blind. I used to work as an EMS dispatcher before deciding to switch careers.

Dispatcher type of job need the ability to read maps and understand locations from people (which may be an issue. I have no clue what eg '7800 block of x road' means even if i am are of the road).
(Other issues may arise from random things needing sight, or additional disabilities and/or citizenship requirements)

There are, of course, civilian jobs in a police department too. Jobs that you are not the least bit better at just because you have trained as a police officer. And, frankly, jobs where policemens skills in firearms, tactical driving, situation assessment and whatnot would be a complete waste because your job takes place in an office.

You don't need to talk to a police officer to report your bike stolen. You need to talk to someone who works for the police department and knows the procedure and the forms to fill in. And that person can probably be visually impaired without it impacting the service given.

So, it kind of depends on if you live in a place big enough that they need to employ people specialising in helping the public fill out forms, or if that is a part-time duty of someone with a shield.

And, come to think of it, if you happen to have skills that would come in handy in a forensics lab, then you could very well work in one. You won't see much of the real world, but that is probably true in a lot of labs anyway.

The same goes if you happen to be an accountant or HR specialist. Or a good cook.

There are many cogs in a well working machinery.

What I'm trying to say is that working as a policeman, not gonna happen. Working *for* the police, totally possible.

Depends also if the form needs visual input.

You might could train to become a K-9 trainer. You could also work as a victim advocate. Also, you might could work as a 911 operator.
